Who hasn't dreamed of saddling a huge-upgradeable-gatling gun- toting mech and murdering millions upon millions of nemeses within 5 distinct stages!? *inhales * Answer: lame people. For the rest of us, developer Vanguard has developed Gatling Gears, the follow-up to the studios' 2010 cerebral turn based debut Greed Corps. You play as Max Brawley, the mech clad protagonist and vessel of destruction. The story Vanguard attempts to chisel out of this wrecking ball of a title is shorter than this review itself, and is as follows: Max is a seasoned pilot who recently defected from a group known only as the Empire. The Empire is one of four endlessly warring "groups" that fight over rapidly diminishing resources in the fictional Mistbound- Max's home. Mistbound is literally crumbling away under destructive mining techniques employed by various groups primarily to (gasp) fund the war effort. Max gets fed up, steals a mech, and thus begins your journey. Or should I say massacre? The word journey would imply something other than destruction takes place.Mistbound is the fictional earth-inspired dystopia created by Vanguard. It was created to serve as a backdrop for it's titles, a narrative thread, and to add much needed focus to an otherwise erratic young body of work. I pray they flesh this world out some more. To be blunt, I believe the concept of Mistbound to be the most compelling concept to come out of Vanguard.Gatling Gears is a top down, twin-stick shooter. Yep, another one. While I believe that all works of art (which I consider games to be) should be judged on their own merit, you can't just paint a purple shoe in and expect to improve a Picasso. Though to be clear, Vanguard would never claim innovation is their goal, punishing the hardcore fills that role. Their focus is impressive, all things considered, and GG does what it does well while offering just enough to entice casual gamers to check out.GG is a love letter to Robotron nerds, some have claimed. That claim may be true, if misleading. Where Robotron was innovative, GG's appeal is simply it's modern functionality, and it certainly delivers on that illusion. The handling is responsive and the framerate is smooth throughout. I completed the game in about 6 hours on Easy, and considering I just briefly tested the 3 survival challenges and standard multiplayer possibilities, it has a lot of gameplay to offer. The Gatling gun is GG's bread and butter, with it, you'll mow down enemies, destroy objects for loot, and... well, that's pretty much it. But believe me when I say it's satisfying and you'll seamlessly lose hours carving out your own breakneck strategy. There's only 4 attacks to remember for the entire game, and one's a screen clearing special, only to be used once per level, allowing you to hone your little bag of tricks to perfection. Moment to moment, the bulk of your experience will be spent refining your evasion/advancement tactics which I define as the cadence of eliminating enemies from the screen in a timely manner (to prevent being overwhelmed) while simultaneously sustaining as little damage as possible while progressing "right-wards", the games favorite direction. The limited range of the Gatling gun has been a hot subject of debate, some viewing it as a limitation and nothing more, and it's easy to see why- many shooters permit cross screen range and have been for years. But GG was designed to be a close quarters, reflex-heavy experience. It's influences be damned. This is what the game is. Deal with it. The levels were designed to suit this style of gameplay and bleed ambushes, mines, ariel assaults out the ears. The invisible walls can sometime harm this experience but that's splitting hairs really. The leveling system is a nice touch, but lacks depth. You will reach it's cap early on into your second playthrough. Despite this, your enemies will grow ever stronger and you ever more pissed off, save for the hardcore, of course. The bossfights are real standouts, and the promise another will surely keep some trucking through the more forgettable portions of the game. I can only describe these as the sensory equivalent of an erector set and too much acid, twisting and undulating with a sinister, serpentine mantra. They also break up the wave elimination gameplay effectively, each sporting unique strategic requirements to defeat- none of which I would dare spoil for you.Gatling Gears disregards the whole "depth and strategy" motif of its smarter older brother with a confident guffaw instead favoring the immediate thrills of "twitch-flex" controls and cinematic pizazz. Gatling Gears is such a departure from everything Greed Corps, I'm certain the title of Gatling Gears: the Departure must have been at least briefly considered. As a result, playing through Gating Gears feels more like a scenic stroll than it should, so lacking in narrative that the bulk of the game just feels like window candy, which for some gamers is just what the doctor ordered.Score: 76/100

4A fun and fast bullet-hell game.
By Jake
Gatling Gears takes place in the same world and has the same atmosphere as Greed Corp. Which is a fantastic world and has beautiful art design. The game is not a turn based strategy game like Greed Corp though and is more like a bullet hell game but less intense then the traditional bullet hell games such as 1942: joint strike. The gameplay is fun and smooth although I did have issues with the camera and EA's stupid online log in system. If you can get around some weird lack of camera movement where you have to walk to the edge of the screen in order for it to move and EA being EA it is a great game and is worth the price.
