Breathtaking

With the slew of (in my opinion) unoriginal games that seem to flood the market (shooters that imitate each other and generic "numbered titles") it seems like everything that is not published by some big company is simply not worth your money. Bastion is the perfect example of a game that manages to do what so few other games truly do: leave the user in awe.Bastion tells a confusing story. Its about this boy who wakes up after a so called "Calamity" (a type of disaster) hits the world he lives in. Struggling for survival he runs off to the "Bastion" a type of floating "fortress" to which all people should go to seek refuge should there ever be a disaster. The Kid (as he is referenced to in the game) has to now reinforce the Bastion to restore the world he once knew, by collecting these shards and energy cores scattered around the fragments of his world that still exist. What makes the story so interesting here is how amazingly original and refreshing it is. There is no dialogue, however the game is told through a man called Rucks who narrates everything you (The Kid) do right from the beginning of a level to the end. Rucks is also the only survivor you have on the Bastion at the beginning, and he is the only character who is voiced over. Over the course of the game new characters get introduced, however you dont ever know much about them. To find out more about the characters (yourself included) you have to finish these so called Dream Worlds which are completely optional and a lot fun to play through. This method of storytelling (the narrator especially) makes Bastions story incredibly refreshing and interesting.Bastion can best be described as an Action RPG. You play as the Kid and you get to pummel monsters and other creatures into the ground with whatever weapons you acquire. These start out as simple things like a hammer and a bow and arrow, but eventually become Mortars, Rifles and even a bazooka. For those interested in getting this game for your kids. No, there is no gore nor any real violence in this game. Its by no means something that a 3 year old should play (mainly because they wouldnt know what to do) but I wouldnt hesitate ever giving this to a 6 year old. Combat is very simple: you have your Mouse 1 attack (usually your knife or hammer), your Mouse 2 attack (Bow, Pistols etc) and your "Q" attack (such as the Whirlwind attack which makes you move around in a circular fashion hitting everything with your hammer). Within the game there is a lot of room for customization. Each weapon can be upgraded in a lot of very individual ways. Additionally, there are many "Q" attacks to equip.Bastion already offers up a nice challenge on its Normal setting. For those who find it too easy, you have the ability to use the Shrine. At the shrine you can place these idols of gods which make your game harder in many ways. For example, one idol makes all enemies drop a little bomb right after they die. Activating these has a nice bonus too as you get more experience and "money" from each kill. This makes the game highly customizable and replayable. And for those who just want to have fun there is the so called "No-Sweat Mode" where you get an infinite amount of retries. This game mode is more for the kind of people who are less interested in complicated/difficult gameplay and are more interested in the experience that the story delivers.One last great aspect of this game shines brighter than anything else: the soundtrack. This games music is so incredibly gorgeous you wont want to leave a place or mission in fear of never hearing the songs again. Dont believe me? Look up "Build that Wall" or "Setting Sail, Coming Home" on youtube. This must be my favorite all time soundtrack of a video game (and ive played a couple of hundred games), as it perfectly sets the mood no matter where you are in the game. It is no surprise that in 2011 one of this games songs took the Award for Best Original Score at a VGA conference.All in all, Bastion is a must-have, must-play, type game. I cant understand why someone would not like it. Its amazing from start to finish (especially the end!). The only minor downside to the game is that its relatively short. On my first playthrough the game lasted me about 6 hours (I even did a few of the weapon training grounds). However, upon finishing the game a "Score Attack" mode becomes available as well as a New Game Plus option which allows you to restart the game carrying over all the weapons and XP from your previous game.I hope you will give this game a shot as it is one of the best games that I have played in recent times.

Fun button masher

Bastion is a very fun game, it's simple you play "The Kid" in this third person overhead view action game. This game is old school 2d beat em up but the colors and the style are pretty amazing, the story is fairly simple "The Kid" grows up in hard life mom sick and dies, and then the calamity hits it's come type of plague that turns almost everyone into ash. In the game you must find crest and rebuild the Bastion which can restart everything to before the calamity. You spend most of the game beating up baddies with weapons you acquire and collect crystals that make your weapons more powerful. This game is very fun, challenging at times, and is well worth the $7.50 I paid for it, it's short can be beaten in about 7-8 hours but I had fun the whole time.

Exceedingly lovely game. Great art, music, and variety from start to finish

This game is quite simply: lovely. It is gorgeous to look at and to listen to. From start to finish there are a wide variety of different creatures, and atmospheres, with an awesome blend of different music styles.The story is really well done, too. I don't generally like video games that revolve heavily around a story. I'm much more interested in just messing around. But since the story here is told by the narrator as you play, you cannot escape it. Nor do you want to. It is interesting, and the writing is quite good. As you play, you're getting bits of the story relevant to what you're doing, so it's even better because you're not interrupted to sit through a video most of the time.The gameplay is quite fun, lots of variety, though perhaps a bit less than challenging at times. But there are extra modes, and ways to enhance the bad guys that allow you to change that as you would like to.It is hard for me to overstate how nice this game is to play. It is relaxing, and challenging enough to keep you going. Extra modes allow you to get quite a bit out it once you've completed the story, but even if the game ended with the story, you are getting a very well polished game in Bastion.
