Alice: Madness Returns

Product Description

Eleven years ago a horrific fire took Alice's family from her and left her mind horrifically scarred. Afterwards she was confined to Rutledge Asylum, where she struggled to confront her demons by slipping further into her fantasy world of Wonderland. Now, after ten years, she has finally secured her release-yet she still bears the heavy psychological burden of that tragic event. With her mind in tatters, she is unable to resolve the fear prompted by her strange memories, dreams, and visions. Perhaps she'll do better in Wonderland. She always has. She travels there, seeking what the “real” world can't provide: security, knowledge, and the truth about the past. But in her absence, Wonderland too has suffered. Something has gone horribly wrong, and now a great evil is descending upon what once was her beautiful refuge. Can Alice save Wonderland-and herself-from the madness that consumes them both?

4Another fan of the original
By Jeremee Wetherby
Before I start, I'd like to make a few things clear. I am a big fan of the original game and was looking forward to the sequel so I already have a positive attachment to this game. Secondly, I'm running this on an Alienware computer with dual graphic cards so I cannot comment on lag issues that have been highlighted by other reviewers. The Review-This game is visually stunning. The more I play, the more time I'm taking to explore the environments and really enjoy the detail the designers have put into the game. It's this very point I think that's causing other to dislike the game. Recently, I've seen a trend in gaming to identify a challenge and work to complete that challenge as quickly as possible. My son is a prime example, he works to get through a game as quickly as possible and doesn't try to enjoy the game, the challenges, and the puzzles. Alice:Madness Returns reminds me of many of the early computer games that were released. Various jumping, lever, platform challenges to move onto the next level. The enjoyment from Alice comes from the amazing visuals and how Alice actually moves. Her hair, her outfits, and the butterflys that appear when she dies, sprints, or floats down to a platform. An additional perk is her heightened senses when she's small. This sense allows Alice to see hidden platforms and messages throughout the game. Most of these messages are informative, however, a few I found very amusing. The combat system has been upgraded and it is very satisfying. There are a few issues which I will highlight below, but overall, it's tolerable and it's not anything that I don't think a future patch can't resolve. The NegativesThis was clearly ported to PC. A game controller is clearly the way this game was meant to be played, however, I had to give it up since it became very frustrating to constantly readjust the camera angle to follow Alice with the controller vs use the mouse. Additionally, As highlighted in some of the negative reviews, is the "targeting" combat mode. I believe this was meant as a simple way to use ranged attacks in the game, however, it becomes very frustrating when you have to switch between ranged and melee. While in targeting mode, you can use the umbrella to deflect attacks but you can't when your not in this mode. This can be very frustrating especially when I don't typically use the auto-target feature. This is where a game controller would make it very simple to switch modes on the fly and a keyboard makes that difficult. Also, I've found the only way to get out of this mode quickly is to shrink.Overall, I'm really enjoying this game despite the control issues. The story is clearly pulling me in and continues to pull me deeper and deeper down the rabbit hole. For those reviews that highlighted the frustration of not being able to save, welcome back to the old days of gaming which in an ironic sense I'm enjoying. It's forcing me to learn how to play the game better and make Alice more agile. I wouldn't recommend this game to someone who just enjoys getting through a game as quickly as possible, but to someone who is willing to take the time and enjoy it for what it is. If your the type of person that enjoyed Psychonauts, you will definitely enjoy Alice:Madness Returns.

3Make sure you have a good graphics/video card!
By o.o
******************************************************************************************************************I bought this game the first day it came out, anxious to play it. While it did not work on my computer because I had crummy a graphics card, my brother allowed me to use his because his computer has the recommended graphics card, and was more suited for gaming. On the highest setting it ran good, but not perfectly, so I turned the resolution and dynamic shadows off (on will really kill your cpu) and it worked much better :)Now, as for the game itself, it wasn't bad but it was lacking in many areas, which I will explain in a minute.(NOTE: REVIEW FOR THE GAME PLAYED ON NORMAL MODE, OTHER MODES LIKE HARD, OR NIGHTMARE, MAY HAVE SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT THINGS o.o)******************************************************************************************************************THE PROSStory: Like the first game, due to a fire that happened is Alice's past, she is still scared and trying to pick up the memories of what really happened with that fire. Since she is troubled, her wonderland is troubled as well. Now a train is part of the reason why wonderland is so corrupted and Alice must try and get to this train before it corrupts even more of it. It is rather interesting, in my opinion, to see a macabre version of Alice in wonderland.Graphics: if your computer can support it, the game actually looks very pretty, not final fantasy 13 pretty, but still clear, with many shades of colors.Change of Costumes: During the different stages you have to go through Alice will have some costume changes, so I guess you don't get bored of looking at the same Alice dress :PNew Items to Collect: In the first Alice, even though I can't remember it that well, I remember only collecting new weapons to keep. In this game, there are new things to look for such as pig snouts that lead to hidden areas, new weapons that can get upgraded up to 3x with shark teeth, and bottles and memories holding clues to the real past.New Health: You now have roses that display as your health. I can't remember what displayed your health in the last game xD but now you can also gain roses buy going into these huge shells hidden around in the various stages that, if you complete the test, give you red paint to "paint the rose red", where, if you get 4 paints, you get another rose added to your life.Hysteria Mode: The all new Hysteria Mode! In the previous Alice, if you drank a red potion you went into crazy mode and got a lot stronger. Now, the potions are no longer and if you are low on health you can hit a key to go into hysteria mode. Alice turns all white and the only other colors are black and red. Enemies cannot hurt you and you can do a lot more damage, it only lasts for a limited time though.(side note: Also if you kill an enemy in hysteria mode, you will not get shark teeth from it.)------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------NEUTRALCan't Get Lost: The game is pretty straight set. I never once got lost anywhere. But there were always different ways to go,and these led to memories/bottles or shark teeth or pig snouts which kept the game a little interesting, but got rather redundant after a while since there is nothing else to look for. You always knew which way to go because when you clicked on the key to become small alice, purple icons popped up on the wall or floor showing you which way led to what, skull leading to a fight and usually the next area, house to memories, and bottle to bottles. The downside is that, you usually couldn't go back the way you came (which could be annoying if you forgot bottles, pigsnouts, etc.)Not So Much In the Way of Puzzles: I personally like puzzle games and I like it when non puzzle based games throw puzzles at you to keep you thinking. While there WERE puzzles in this game they were far from difficult. Sometimes you would have to rearrange some puzzle blocks to make a picture, but these didn't take that long. The only thing even close to stumping me was a chess puzzle towards the end of the game. Those were basically the only puzzles. I found myself doing the same puzzle block thing at least 3 times in different stages so it was redundant and there were no exciting new puzzles to come. But at least there were SOME puzzles to keep things slightly more interesting.Slight Glitches: I am usually not one to get glitches in games, so it's weird when I do. I remember I had a glitch once where a crab enemy got stuck by an invisible force and I needed to kill him so I could advance to the next area. After trying a number of ways to try and get it out, nothing worked and I just had to reset. It wasn't that big of a deal, there are always gonna be glitches in games right? But if found a glitch, I'm sure many others probably have probably found a few too because I NEVER find glitches.Only Four Weapons? If I remember right, there were a few more weapons than four in the previous Alice. I'm not going to say only four weapons is a bad thing, you get well accustomed to all the weapons.(Plus you did get to upgrade them) But I found that using only those four got rather tedious, I personally would have preferred a few more.Controls: Maybe it was just because I was not used to using those controls, but to lock onto an enemy you had to push caps lock, and to switch to another enemy you had to use tab. While it makes sense, I often found myself hitting the wrong key a lot. (You could not change these keys in the control options)Sudden Pausing of the Game: As you are wandering around wonderland, occasionally the game with pause for a slight second to load some data. Another thing is that, if there are too many enemies or objects flying being created (with the killing or monsters of destroying of obstacles) the game will start to lag. Maybe it's just cuz I didn't use the top notchiest gaming computer in the world :PQuick to Finish?: It didn't take me more than 2 days to beat this game, and that was with a lot of breaks. I'm sure it could be beaten in less than a day.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------CONS:Just Too much Fighting: You couldn't usually get to far without fighting some bad guys. I mean, after a while it just gets boring. You have to fight the group of bad guys to open the way to the next area, then do it again, and again. However, there were some new enemies thrown in at each stage so at least you had some new enemies that required you to kill them using different methods. Yet, the same darn black blobs appeared everywhere and got pretty redundant and annoying, especially the 5 faced blob.Paint the Rose Red Areas: To get another paint vile from these shell rooms, you have to complete a certain test. While that idea is not a problem, it's the fact that the tests are redundant. Once you enter the shell, you are on a platform table with a huge rabbit and mouse looking down at you it's usually you either have to kill all the enemies or survive the passage of time. The environment never changes and the tests didn't change and got boring. Plus that darn rabbit always says the same thing at the end when you complete the test, "You've already missed the train!" (Geee if you know that I fricken missed the train you annoying rabbit, why don't you tell me where it's going to be next or it's schedule!)Camera: I can't really explain it but the camera angles could get rather obnoxious. Most of the time they were fine but commonly the camera would screw up and Alice would move in a direction that you don't want her to go. Maybe it's just the way they did it, but moving the character in a certain direction would sometimes be a bit harder than it should have been.************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************OVERALL:All in all this game was okay. I took away one star away from this game because I did not like all the fighting and I took away another start because I got bored toward the middle of the game with the lack of different things to look for and the fact that it you can just aimlessly wander around and still get to the next area you are supposed to go to fairly quick. (While that makes it easy, it also makes it, like I said, rather boring.) I liked the first game better.************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************WHY i THINK THE FIRST GAME WAS BETTERThe first game seemed more challenging overall in the way of enemies, obstacles, and puzzles. In the first game there was always something exciting and new that would pop up randomly, so it didn't matter that there wasn't much to "look" for in the way of items. The environment changed at a good pace: I remember going in a water environment for a bit but then coming up on land, then not too long after going to another setting. In the first game the enemies were tougher: Enemies came crashing out from mirrors, tons of ghosts would scream at you and make it hard for you to pay attention to aiming at them, and there weren't a whole lot of those red potions to make yourself stronger. You didn't have to kill enemies: You actually most of the time didn't have to kill enemies if you really didn't want to, unlike in the second game where a good 95% of the time you have to kill the enemies. The environments actually felt like puzzles in themselves: There were A LOT more hidden things, for instance, in a few stages, you had to FIND your way to the next area, you couldn't just aimlessly wander around and walk into it. You would find yourself searching every nook and cranny of a stage until like an hour later you found the hidden area that advances you to the next room. THE ASYLUM STAGE WAS A PUZZLE. That stage was just crazy. It was a wall of mirrors that took forever to find your way through, and the enemies that came crashing out of the mirrors didn't make things any easier because they could mess up your sense of direction xD.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------I would recommend playing Madness returns if you have played the first and want to continue with the series, but it was not worth the $50 I paid for it. I'd say wait till it goes down to about 30 bucks :)

5An Updated Alice
By Taco Mike
I just received the game and installed it this evening. I spent close to two hours working my way through the first level and thought I'd throw in my two cents.First, I'm running it in Windows XP (SP3) on a 1.77 AMD Athlon 64 processor(3500+), with 2GB RAM, and a 7600GT Nvidia video card. For a machine that just meets the minimum requirements, the game runs fairly well. There are a few framerate issues, and it can lag with multiple enemies on the screen. Otherwise, I haven't had a major problem yet. There are minor dialogue cut scenes in which the dialogue skips and repeats itself (the parts where Alice recovers memories), but with the subtitles on, it's not anything to get upset about. The visuals are gorgeous. The game has some really impressive scenery, and I would say that it's almost worth the cost of admission just for that alone. The story will seem familiar to anyone who's played the original. It's been expanded somewhat, but it's definitely a continuation of the original, rather than a retread.Gameplay is virtually the same as in the first, but with some updated actions. Without reading the manual, there's not much of a learning curve for familiar players. The dodge maneuver is particularly cool-looking, and there are some new enemies to deal with, so I don't feel as if this is a slavish remake of the first game.My final verdict is that it's a nice continuation of the story from the original. There's enough new content to make it feel new to me, while still maintaining continuity. It runs on a fairly old setup, which is very refreshing, considering that Unreal Tournament 3 wouldn't run on this system. The graphics are great, and I give it an overall four out of five on first impressions.

PlayStation 3 80GB MotorStorm Bundle

Product Description

As DVD playback made the PlayStation 2 more than just a game machine, hefty multi-media features make the Sony PlayStation 3 an even more versatile home entertainment machine. Features such as video chat, internet access, digital photo viewing, and digital audio and video will likely make it the central component of your media set-up. Still, it is first and foremost a game console--a powerful one at that.

Under the Hood
The PS3 features IBM's "Cell" processor and a co-developed Nvidia graphics processor that makes the system able to perform two trillion calculations per second. That's approximately 320 times more calculations per second than the PS2. Along with the traditional AV and composite connections, it also boasts an HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) port, which delivers uncompressed, unconverted digital picture and sound to compatible high-definition TV and projectors. The system is capable of 128-bit pixel precision and 1080p resolution for a full HD experience.

PlayStation 3: Tower of Power

A sleek new look
Features a wireless motion-sensitive controller

Blu-Ray Is the New Way
Sony's PlayStation 3 games are encoded onto the Blu-Ray disc media format, which can hold six times as much data as traditional DVDs. This increase in capacity, combined with the awesome power of its processor and graphics card, promises mind-blowing games once developers have learned how to fully harness the new console's power. The PS3 will also support CD-ROM, CD-RW, DVD, DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD+R formats.

In addition, PlayStation 3 system software update version 2.20 and up includes BD Live support. With this you can now play discs that support Blu-ray Disc Profile 2.0 (BD-LIVE) and you can also connect to the Internet while playing discs that support this format so that you can obtain additional features. Features that are available vary depending on the software in use.

Sensational Controller
New gamers intuitively move the controller while playing, even though that movement has traditionally had no relation to what's going on in the game. Sony has picked up on this tendency and is using it to bring a new level of control to the PS3. Inside the controller is a high-precision six-axis sensing system that accurately detects fine movements in pitch, roll, and yaw, as well as three dimensions of movement. This means that future PS3 games will be controlled by the movements of your hands rather than just your thumbs. For example, you might be able to steer a car by holding the controller like a steering wheel.

While the PS3 controller looks much like its Dual Shock predecessors, it will lack the force-feedback vibration since that would only interfere with the sensing system. It uses Bluetooth 2.0 wireless technology and can support up to seven wireless controllers at a time. It's a hot-swappable system, so if your controller is running low on power, just pause your game and connect a USB 2.0 cable. You can continue playing while your controller recharges automatically.

Backwards Compatible
The PlayStation 3 will be backward compatible with most PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games, which means you'll be able to play your favorite games without keeping all the old systems. The console will have slots for Memory Stick Duo, an SD slot and a Compact Flash memory slot. It comes with a pre-installed hard disc drive, which allows you to save games as well as download content from the internet.

Gran Turismo 5 Prologue

Resistance: Fall of Man

A Slew of New Games
A whole host of game publishers are already backing the PS3 and several have even confirmed games for the console. At the 2006 Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), more than 30 titles were displayed for the system, including Gran Turismo HD, Resistance: Fall of Man, and Final Fantasy XIII. Previously announced titles include Metal Gear Solid 4, Devil May Cry 4 and Tekken 6.

Online
Sony has stated that the PS3 will have similar online connectivity and services as the next generation of Xbox Live. Calling it "an always on, always connected device," SCEI's chief technical officer Masa Chatani said the PS3 would be constantly in touch with a "PlayStation World" network "fundamentally based on community, communication commerce, and content." Technically, the infrastructure is there to make that connection. The PS3 supports 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX, 1000BASE-T Ethernet, as well as IEEE 802.11 b/g wireless networking protocols.

What's in the Box?

  • Game system
  • Sixaxis wireless controller
  • AC power cord
  • Audio/Video cable (HDMI or Component cable sold separately)
  • Ethernet cable
  • USB cable
  • MotorStorm

5Great system...but beware!
By GarionOrb - (R.I.P. [G.H.O.S.T]™)
This system is incredible. By now you either love it or hate it, so I won't go into details. But here's a word of warning on the 80 GB model. The backwards compatibility is very much reduced from the 60 GB model. This is because the 80 GB lacks the hardware that previous models use to play PS1 and PS2 games (Emotion Engine). Now, games from old systems run on emulation software. While this works with some titles, others don't work right at all. Sony promises to release patches with future system updates, but they've also said their priority will be with developing PS3 games and not spending time and energy on PS1 and 2.So if backwards compatibility is a big selling point for you, get the 60 GB model instead (while they're still around...remember they've been discontinued). Also noteworthy is that hard drives on the 60 GB model are fully upgradable with any HDD drive on the market.Let me restate this, however. The PlayStation 3 really IS the greatest console of this generation. It's power and capabilities are just downright colossal.

5A Leap Forward in So Many Ways!
By A. C. Ege/Acedoh
For all of you considering the PS3 this is one of the best choices you can make when it comes to home entertainment. Gaming and multimedia are taken to the next level.First getting my hands on the PS3 made me realize that this is the largest Playstation conosle by volume and weight they have ever come out with. I quickly realized how sturdy and well made this product is. The plastic that is used is solid and heavy duty. I also realized how easy dust and fingerprints attract to the shiny finish which is both plastic and fake chrome. Connecting the PS3 was the easy part. Unlike the Wii and 360 Sony has left the power station inside the console. Which means you only need one heavy duty plug to connect. From the back of the console you have many choices for video and audio outputs. The standard AV outlet is there which allows you to play with the cables it comes with or to buy component cables for high definition viewing. You also have a optical digital output for full digital sound. New to any video game console is HDMI output. This allows you to have the PS3 in full high definiton video and audio. HDMI is capable of a full digital signal allowing 1080p true high definition picture. It is also capable of unleashing 7.1 high definition sound. So audiophiles should be happy about what this console offers. On the front end you get three memory card slots which are hidden behing a plastic door...so as to not diminish the appearance of the PS3. Also they included four USB outlets. This allows you to connect various devices like a photo camera, internet camera, mouse, or even a printer. The Sony PS3 has a feature that allows it to be on standby at all times. Which is similar to the other consoles. I will talk more about this feature on the PS3 further in the review.I would like to cover all the interface options the PS3 accompanies seperately so consumers can become aware of all the advantages this console carries. For those of you familiar with the Playstation Portable this interface is almost exactly the same. You are able to create seperate logins for anyone who uses the PS3. This allows for each person to go online with their information. Although it doesn't really have many more advantages than that right now it is rather insignificant.Next is the system settings. This allows the user to adapt the PS3 to their television and sound system. You can adjust the high defention settings to fit the maximum resolution of your t.v. You also have setting for your blue tooth devices and internet connections. The PS3 comes with built in wi-fi which seems to have a strong connection that gives you almost seamless online use.The PS3 also has a photo viewer. You can download photos by two different means. One is by using your camera and connecting it via USB. I haven't checked to see how viable this option is. Next you can download the pictures with a memory card. This operation is rather simple and downloads are quick. Generally you get your standard slide shows although they have a fun feature. It allows you to view your pictures on a blank canvas as they fall onto the blank canvas. Slide shows are best when you set them to your music.Next is the music player. You can dowload songs by two different means. One being memory card and the other cd. Songs download much quicker via memory card than cd. Although Sony has talked about having downloads via the internet which I think would go over very well. You can listen to music while viewing a feature that uses colors and textures. It is your standard music viewer...nothing special there.I want to talk about one of the most notorious features of the PS3. The Bluray player. Most of you now know what a Bluray player is and does. I have viewed numerous movies on it. I have also viewed these movies on two different hdtv's. One a 1080p and a 1080i. I really did not notice much of a picture difference. After viewing a few movies on the XBox 360 hddvd player and the PS3 Bluray player I really did not notice much of a difference. One thing I have noticed about hd movies is that the ones more than a couple years older have a slightly grainy appearance since they were remastered for high definition. Newly made movies appear crystal clear with vivid colors and tremoundous definition. The PS3 does allow you to view regular DVD's which can make the transition that much easier. The regular DVD movies are upscaled on your HDTV allowing an excellent picture. For many of the new movies it is almost difficult to notice a difference in a DVD picture and Blu-ray picture. Now would be the gameplay part of the interface. This keeps track of the game disc you may have in the player or also games or demos that you have downloaded. This interface is rather simple and easy to negotiate. For any PS2 owner it also carries your virtual memory card with all your game data. As far as the games go I have played numerous games plus several demos. The games that are non exclusive like Madden Football are deficent on the PS3 compared to XBox 360 counterparts. The game speed is smooth and polished. The visuals on exclusive PS3 games like Heavenly Sword and Ratchet and Clank is quite impressive. The PS3 seems to create a living vivid environment with the ability to create many textures and surfaces. Game demos like Motorstorm and Gran Turismo HD show what the PS3 is capable of. Amazing graphics and sound quality will become apparent in many of the games this holiday season and beyond. I have also enjoyed the few full games that are downloadable. The games have enhanced hd graphics and are affordable at only $7.99-$9.99. What I have enjoyed is online gaming. With the PS3 you don't have to pay any added fees. The gameplay was seamless and quick and allows you to use a blue tooth headset when playing. I also believe you can use your PS2 headset via USB. The online gaming is virtually the same as the 360.Lastly I will cover the online features of the PS3. On the interface online is a big part. From the browser to having friends and checking your mail. Of course the largest feature is the Playstation store. Which is obviously not very unique. The 360 has a market which could be considered the pedigree for consoles. The Wii is limited to just classic video games. The Playstation store is decent right now with very numerous items to download. You have games, demos, and movie trailers. The store will continue to grow and has a nice feature that allows you to dowload PSone games for the Playstation Portable (PSP). After dowloading it to your PS3 then you transfer it via USB to your PSP. Also a very intriguing feature that I think is really amazing is called remote play. When your PSP is integrated into your PS3 you have the ability to view and listen to stuff on your PS3 anywhere in the world with your PSP. All you need is a wifi connection. I have tried this feature out and it's really enjoyable. I was able to view movie trailers and listen to my music on my PSP. The feature is nice although it is supposed to work when the PS3 is on standby. It did not work for me then. Only when the PS3 was on and set for remote play. There are also two features that are becoming more apparent for owners. Folding at Home is a beneficial program that works with Stanford University. The program runs when your PS3 is idle. What it does is run computations that help scientists work for many cures to diseases. A beneficial plus to the PS3. I can vouch for having my PS3 on nonstop 24 hours a day 7 days a week for many months without any problems. Secondly I want to talk about HOME. No not your real home but the PS3 program that will be available early 2008. This program will be a virtual online social interface allowing you to meet numerous other PS3 players. I have been allowed to participate on the Beta version and I must say this has extreme potential.2008 will be an exciting year for PS3 owners. The experience is already excellent with over a dozen very good games. The PS3 will have over a half dozen superb games releasing next year. Games like Gran Turismo 5, Killzone 2, Little Big Planet, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy are just the beginning. If any of these games suit you it would be an excellent reason to own a PS3.In closing I will say without a doubt the PS3 has been quite an experience. I feel the $500 is well worth it for the features you get. Wifi, Bluray, memory card readers, HDMI, and of course the game playing.I believe many of you are on the fence and trying to justify a large scale purchase like this. The games are here and the experience is superb. If you want a wonderful living room centerpiece that will provide numerous hours of use the PS3 is the way to go.

5Same great system but less hardware
By R. Cho
This 80G system is basically the same as 60G, but there is some hardware reduction which leads to manufacturing cost reduction. But Sony probably won't pass on the savings to the consumers since they've been selling PS3 at loss since launch. One of the hardware reduction is EE+GS removal which is responsible for PS and PS2 backward compatibility. Now the new 80G system's backward compatibility will rely on software emulation. We all know dedicated hardware is better than software emulation. So this raises a little concern.Other hardware modifications for cost reduction are consolidation of some ICs into a single chip and moving to smaller 65nm die cell processor. This will reduce the complexity of the board. Also smaller die means less power consumption which also means less heat dispassion from the components. So whether you want to buy new 80G system or phasing out 60G system is up to how you feel about the hardware changes. If removal of backward compatibility hardware concerns you, buy 60G system before it's all gone, not to mention it's $100 cheaper. If you think additional 20G hard drive space (which really isn't much) is important to you, buy 80G system. 80G system probably runs much cooler too. Either way it's a great system.

5Sets the standard
By Genesis Whitmore
Folks either love or hate this game, me.. I love it. I don't own a playstation so this was my only chance at playing this game which I'd been champing at the bit for since its release onto the PSX. Then it finally came out.

Every Final Fantasy game is different. They all take place in practically different worlds with different characters (except for a few recurring minor ones) but thet all have the same themes -- love, hope, destiny, and destruction. FFVIII follows the path of Squall, a young trainee trying to join SeeD, an elite mercenary fighting force.

The magic system is a bit difficult to master at first, but they help you as much as possible along the way and if it ever gets confusing you can always let the computer manage it for you. Spells no longer cost 'mana', and instead you simply draw a limited supply of them from points on the map or from monsters. New weapons are no longer purchased, but instead existing ones are upgrated with items you earn after battles or by stealing them from monsters.

My first impressions were that the polygon models looked a bit odd, and the characters were all very stereotyped. Squall was the grumpy quiet type, Zell was a hothead, Rinoa was the vunerable chick, Quistis was the bookworm, Irvine was the sentementalist, and Selphie was the ditz. But as I played through I found that the game only made me think that on the outside. These characters had desires, they had dreams, loves, and hidden secrets that made them what they were.

The game drew me in like a moth to a bulb. I wanted to find out what was going to happen next! I wanted my heros to win! I scrabbled along the numerous sub-quests and attacked every new plot thread that showed up.

Fourty hours or so later I finally emerged viceorious... and I wanted to play it again!

4Simply Amazing
By Carlo Esparza
The graphics for this game are just too damn sweet! This is one thing you will hear alot about from this game,I recommend everyone who wants to buy an RPG for PC.

The only prob is that you need hella hardware just to get the damn thing working great.

Great Storyline and Gameplay make this a soild hit, please make sure you have alot of free time on your hands because this thing is Long as watching Private Ryan 30 times in a ROW! 90+ hours of great fun and excitement.

The only problem I have with it is that the backrounds are Pre Renered and are in LOW REZ,this would have made it A+ qaulity but the Lo Rez will get on your nerves.

A Sure Great a Solid Game,Your Money will worth it and Amazon.com has a great price for it too!

4Really good game
By Bot
-CG Movies --its runs fine in Full Screen using low resolution but you would see pixelation. If you select the high resolution, you would get the fantastic animation but the sound would lag behind. So I guess if you want to play the game with high resolution movies, a Pentium II is necessary. The movies are just amazing to behold!

-Battle Screen: -on my machine the character animation is ok and the guardian forces is wonderful. The camera rotates flawlessly and appropriately. In the later part of the game the animation sequences just skips and stops due maybe because of my lack of memory of the 3d card that I have or the slow processor of my machine. Otherwise all the animation is perfect.

-Menu system: -well, I'm a bit disappointed. Its a bit slow. It takes about 2 to 3 seconds of response time after you hit the button to load the requested menu screen. Compared to FF7, this shouldn't be any problem because the graphics are loaded from memory not the CD-ROM! Electronic Arts didn't have time to bother to improve this interface. The setup is similar, I meant identical to the Playstation version and the colors are all washed out and the graphics are in low resolution. On top of that there is no 'quit' option. YOu have to press a combination of keys before you could reset or quit the game. Yechh!

-Music: -hey what happenned here! I could tolerate MIDI music but the composition and arrangements of the music doesn't compare to FF2,FF3(SNES) or FF7. The overworld music alone would want you to cover your ears and turn off your speakers. The most annoying thing though is when you try to move your characters around the room the music frequently skips.

-Sound: -with EAX on and 4 speakers, its awesome! You could hear every cutting blow of Squall's gunblade or the Guardian Forces' attacks and the booming spectacular explosions.

-Graphics: -well the 3D characters are amazing with motion captured movements but the backgrounds are just awefull in full screen. It looks like paper props and doesn't 'blend' in with the characters. They might as well put black and white pictures in the game. The only solution is to set the game in quarter screen or move away from your monitor to lessen the pixelation or better connect your video card to your tv if you have a tv output.

-Gameplay: -well its a mixed bag. You can't buy magic so you have to 'draw' them on enemies which to me is very tedious and slows the game. There are no treasures to be searched for stronger weapons or magical items. You actually have to collect items from enemies or shops to upgrade your weapons and gain new limit breaks which is essential to win the game. To some this might be ok but to me its again tedious since in some instances you have to fight rare monsters and to equip proper GF abilities to get the items that you need. The worse part is there's nobody in the game that gives you any hint to get some of these rare items! The customization of your character using GFs is a welcome addition but the drawing of magic is again necessary and trust me folks it is really tedious and boring while maxing out your stocks. I remembered drawing magic for 1 hour just fillup all my characters of one particular magic.

-Story: -the dialogue is quite good compared to other Final Fantasy series and there are some instances that you will just couldn't stop laughing at some of the humour in some scenes. The cutscenes, transitions movies are really well thought out and developed like a big budget interactive movie production. The 1st and 2nd discs are non-stop action sequences and really force you not to stop playing. You would be just amazed and realized how Square really put a lot of effort in the plotline. As for disc 3 and disc 4....I don't want to spoil anything so you have to be the judge. All I can say is the story of FF8 is a bit complete than FF7 since there is a resolution in FF8's ending than in FF7--its not open ended.

-Conclusion: I think FF8 is a remarkable PC game if you own the recommended system listed on the FF8 box. It has a great storyline, breathtaking GF animations and most of all an amazing CG movie scenes. You could forgive the MIDI composition but the only thing that rained on the parade is poor programming by Electronic Arts: pixelated backgrounds, poor control and horrible menu system. The complicated GF system also added some wrinkle on the game and bogs down the progress of the story.

One final note: you wont appreciate the story and the ending if you don't analyze the relationship between the characters closely and the sequence of events. I see a lot of people saying the story "suck" but that is not true at all. There are several themes in FF8 that when analyzed is really quite good. Final Score: 8/10

5One of the Best Military Games Ever
By J. Hornbuckle
Operation Flashpoint was one of the best military games ever to come out for PC, and this is pretty much just a direct port of that game over to Xbox. So, if you have already played all the missions on PC, they're all here, unchanged on the Xbox version, so you might be a little bored with itOther than that, this game is perfect. You hear some people bitch because the graphics aren't Halo level or whatever, but they're fine and really the fact that things look a little hazy farther away adds to the realism. If you never played Operation Flashpoint on PC, I can't recommend this game highly enough. Ghost Recon was basically just a Flashpoint rip off, and Flashpoint does it better and offers you a more open ended experience, especially when compared with Ghost Recon 2 and its add ons.

5This is a True Tactical Shooter
By Uziyahu Ben-Adi
Sometimes there is more than one enemy at 3 O'clock. ;-)Considering the fact that the terrains included are FIVE 12 kilometer x 12 kilometer (or about 8 mile x 8 mile) completely unique islands where having skill at reading a topographical map is a distinct advantage, the graphics are excellent. HDR lighting, real-time shadows, depth-of-field effects, multiple LOD's, a completely realistic moving starfield, real-time day/night cycle and lighting, flying insects and birds with their own A.I., real tidal cycles and wave action proportionate to the state of the weather. The list goes on. Soviet soldiers have never looked so realistic in a PC game. The developers somehow managed to take a game that ran with 256 Megs of RAM and make it work WELL on a console with 64 Megs of RAM.A great deal of lies are being told about this game, probably because it is such an EMBARRASSMENT to all of the many watered-down titles claiming to be tactical-shooters, World War II Online and the very old "SEAL Team" by Electronic Arts probably being the only two exceptions. In considering whether to buy this title, one might consider that Operation Flashpoint: Elite is basically the first military SIMULATION to grace the X-Box.If you want to play a game that actually simulates real Army combined-arms operations, then this is the game for you. You cannot, however, scratch its depth in a 30-minute taste. The more you explore the gameplay and the islands, the greater your realization will be that this is the tactical shooter you've always wanted to play.If you would rather be playing Halo or Doom, this game is not for you. For those who used to play Doom on the PC because they did not know that "SEAL Team" existed, Operation Flashpoint: Elite will feel like the tactical playground you've always wanted.Operation Flashpoint: Elite is such a full-featured and realistic tactical-shooter that if you are planning on serving in the United States Army or United States Marine Corps any time soon, it would behoove you to get this 60+ hours of scenario training under your belt before you ship out to Iraq or Afghanistan. Chances are that you will see the game during your military service, as there is a version made just for the military called VBS1.If you join the rest of us on the X-Box Live battlefield, be sure to ask for help. You should find the community quite willing to lend advice. You've never seen teamwork play such a heavy role in the outcome of a mission as you will in Operation Flashpoint: Elite.Every Soldier Counts!A.I.=SuperbGraphics=The Best You Can Find, Given the Size of the IslandsGameplay=RealisticControls=Amazingly SmoothOnline=Best Cooperative Experience You'll FindVoice-Acting=Could Use Some WorkStory=EngagingSoundtrack=Beautifully-Scored

4Great, but Not Perfect
By B. Malangoni
Are you in to realistic military games? Have you logged over 40 hours into Ghost Recon? Have you played Socom: U.S Navy Seals at your friends house more times than he has? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you will love this game. When you start up this game, you will proboly notice that the graphics aren't that good. That is the only flaw about this game. In 2001 this game was realeased on the PC, and it was great. It was basically an offline Battlefield 1942. Now thatit is on the X-Box it carries over the awesome action of the PC version and adds nice control and x-box live functionality.(Not a lot of people play online so you might have to do some searching) This game is a dedicated military simulation that takes place near the mid 80's. So you WW2 enthusiests might want to look elsewhere. This game also features a mission creator which isn't just a level creator. You choose both teams weapons, vehicles(there are a lot to choose from), and Spawn Points. This is a great game. If you can get past the bad graphics, you will find a deep and imersive shooter. Of corse, if you want a modern day military simulation, you might want to try America's Army. If you want a little less realism try Ghost Recon. But if you want the best military sim ever, buy this game.

5Super fun but probably for an older audience.
By Rene
Ever wanted to drive 90 miles an hour through traffic? Now you can. Crazy taxi is a hilarious, fast-paced, extremely fun driving game. The scenario is perfect and guaranteed to create suspense and to cause big laughs. For example, there are a series of challenge games that pit you against a course or a set of obstacles. My children laugh uproariously when I miss a jump and fall down into the depths of the ocean. The main game is full of little details and surprises. The game goes so quickly that you hardly have time to look around the amazingly realistic city you are working in as a taxi driver. One way to limit the inevitable boredom that comes with mastering a game is to start concentrating on exploring the virtual world. Also, there are options for making the game more difficult. Unlike a race game where you are stuck to the course, this game lets you drive on roofs, through train tunnels and even under the water. There's a sort of guilty joy that comes with driving through the mall in the wake of screaming pedestrians.

This last bit of fun is part of the reason that I don't recommend the game for children and why it is rated Teen. This game does not model thoughtful, defensive driving! Parents should know that some of the characters use mild curse words and say "unsupportive things." Also, the "F" word can be heard on the soundtrack in at least one of the songs. And, I'm sure you're child would hear the song enough times to start to be able to pick out the words. You can turn off the music and the game is just as fun. I think the hard driving music does add an appropriate element of "crazy" to crazy taxi. I recommend Crazy Taxi very highly!

4Great! But definitely not for everybody...
By A Customer
A lot of people seem to have trouble 'getting' Crazy Taxi, or rather, understanding why it's something that's supposed to stay fun after the first few tries. It seems to have an immediate appeal to EVERYbody: it's hectic, looks great (full of little touches that nobody's likely to notice, like the dead-on shadows), and you get to drive like a maniac in a bustling, hilly city without suffering the consequences. But after awhile, a lot of people find Crazy Taxi repetitive and dull.

I think Crazy Taxi is more for the pinball/Robotron/Stargate crowd than most games that come out nowadays. The main challenge and reward in it is improving your skills, being able to take the shortest path at ridiculous speed without running into ANYthing (that is, anything that's going to slow you down) -- other than the mostly-instructional "Crazy Box" challenges there's nothing to beat, no extra levels or cars or bosses to get, and the congratulatory credits roll every time you get a reasonably good score. There's a lot of space to improve your skills, though, and a lot of cleverly arranged structures in the game's two cities for taking risks and getting rewarded. If working toward mastery of a fixed, complex environment sounds like fun to you (like pinball, and as opposed to "getting to the next level"), and you're dying for a game that you can actually pick up for five minutes and then put down, then Crazy Taxi just might be for you.

The biggest problem with CT (in my opinion) is that technique isn't rewarded as much as speed is. While a particularly brilliant chain of maneuvers will garner a decent tip (bonus points to you and me), shaving a second or two off your travel time will get you more money than driving boldly, and also mean more time on the ever-decreasing clock. Ah well.

5A VERY IMPRESSIVE ARCADE STYLE RACING GAME......
By A Customer
Crazy Taxi is just one heck of a ride! The thing that makes this game great for people who have short attention spans (such as myself) is that anybody can hop in and start playing right away. Some people don't want to spend an hour or more on a game, and this game delivers a lot of fun right away. Fast-paced, furious and fun--isn't that what racing games are all about?

I don't think you can get bored easily with this game if you truly have a racer's mentality. I loved this game because instead of the course dictating your path in driving, in Crazy Taxi, you can choose WHERE you want to drive and HOW you want to drive, and the city is quite large. You can drive as recklessly as you want, which is great (and your car never suffers any damage or topples over--you still can control it even after numerous collisions). Out of control, weaving in and out of traffic, crashing into things and trying to run over pedestrians; it feels like a wild bumper car experience but much more frenetic. It's wild and crazy driving at its best!

I had my doubts before this game, but it has thoroughly impressed me. The Dreamcast is known for excellent arcade game translations and this is another great example. You have to love the incredible effort that Sega put into this one, especially if you're a big fan of racing games. The only thing I wished it had was more soundtrack options; it does get a little tiring listening to the same old tune, but that's the only complaint.

To summarize, Crazy Taxi is definitely one of the best Dreamcast games out there and an instant classic!
