The First Templar - First Impressions

The First Templar is a game that I found by stumbling around on Steam one day. I saw that it was coming out the following week and decided to preorder it because it came with a bonus stage. It's also available for the 360 and it's bargain priced at $39.99. Does the little known game have enough to keep you interested or does it fall flat in it's attempt to capitalize on the templar craze in gaming brought about by Assassin's Creed. Read on to find out.Before going into The First Templar, remind yourself one thing...it's a budget game. Don't expect amazing graphics or crazy realistic voice acting. If you want that, I can point you to countless other games. These budget games have become a sort of collector's niche over the years with people actively seeking them out. In all honesty, they are classic games. Back in the day all games had horrible voice acting and campy stories. It wasn't until recently when the big budget studios came forward and started dropping boat loads of money on development. Those games are amazing and fun and all that, but it's good to take a look at the seedy underbelly of budget games every once and a while. So, still interested in hearing about the game? Good.The game begins with you as a Knight Templar fighting the good fight with your buddy. You are on a mission to find the holy grail (yep, that grail), and somewhere in the beginning of your battle you are tasked with rescuing a damsel in distress who is the daughter of a fellow Knight. The woman you rescue becomes your other half in the game and she takes up your crusade to find the grail.The story isn't going to win any awards for it's originality but it does ok enough to get the point across. You can follow a logical timeline but if you pay too close attention to it's inconsistencies, it can drive you mad. For instance, one second you are fighting in Acre against the Saracens and the next minute you are on an island. I don't remember jumping on a boat but somehow you did. Again, budget title...let it go or your brain will hurt. The story is there to push the game forward and it does it's job nicely. There is fun to be had following it, just don't sweat the details.Combat in The First Templar is pretty basic with some depth if you wish to use it. You gain exp from enemies and this goes into your characters pool. Once the pool is over 1K, 2K, or more you can unlock skills from a pretty large skill tree. Each character has their own skill tree with the main character taking a more sword/shield offense role while Marie, the other character after you part ways with your original buddy, is a rogue class. Combat is performed on the PC by clicking the left mouse button and I'd assume it would be similar on an Xbox controller, a button press. By holding the button down longer you can charge attacks at the expense of vigor (you collect this by doing damage and it fills up a meter) or perform special moves by pressing the numeric keys. The combat isn't anything special, but it is fun and gets the job done.The graphics in The First Templar are pretty much what you would expect from a budget title. It's not bad but it's also not very good. But remember what I said, this is a budget title, don't expect amazing graphics. If you find some, be happy, otherwise, move along to the gameplay and campy dialog to keep your happy.So, do I recommend The Last Templar? That depends. How much of a backlog of games do you have? If you have big name titles like Portal 2 or SOCOM 4 waiting to be played, I'd put this one on the back burner for now. On the other hand, if you are bored or don't have many games to play, this could easily amount to a solid amount of time spent with the game. It's a fun game that you can't take too seriously. If you heed my warning about not expecting too much, you just may be surprised by how much The First Templar has to give.

Great underrated gem. Definitely worth it.

I like the hack/slash type action rpg type games. This game falls in the same genre as God of War or Witcher loosely speaking. However this game is pretty good. It is a lower budget game but is very polished. The voice acting is good and gameplay is quite satisfying and good albeit repetitive and doesn't quite connect with you satisfyingly like say God of War does or Witcher does.The graphics aren't very 2011 but more like 2003-2004 style. They're good and enough and get the job done. There are upgrade paths, 2 switchable chars, co-op, RPG elements, combos etc.The historical setting of the medieval times is quite good. (Think the movie Kingdom of Heaven with Templars defending Jerusalem).For a $16 game, you cannot complain really. This game is worth even at $30.I am having fun playing this simple yet sweet game.Rating: 8/10
