3HUGE fan of COD...and fairly disappointed
By Scuba Steve
Before I start, please allow me to preface this review with three points:1) I love the COD franchise...and have played every title extensively. My wife will back that statement up...while she sighs and reevaluates her life choices.2) BF2/BC2/BF3 are good games...and I will not bash them. That said, BF is a different experience, with huge battlefields, many different types of vehicles, and a range of player roles. COD is a different animal...and tends to be more of a "just drop into the action" experience. Choose whatever you like. This is a review of a COD title for COD fans...not a critique of BF3.3) I play multiplayer on the PC almost exclusively, so I won't offer much in the way of comments on single player mode in this review.-So how is MW3 on the PC if you are a COD fan? Well, in my opinion, it's a step backwards for the franchise...and a relative low point for the overall series. MW3 does have its good points, but on balance, the game is a disappointment. I know that this opinion may not be popular, so please read on if you want to see why I feel this way.->>> The good old daysI started with the original COD title in 2003...and then jumped into COD:UO, which my gaming group modified heavily. The ability to host mods and custom maps on UO servers kept those servers running, fresh, and populated for years.COD2 provided a similar experience, but with much better graphics, but sadly, no vehicles. That said, we modded the heck out of it and just shut those servers down last month. That was the staying power of that game.COD4:MW (modern warfare) hit the streets and it was revolutionary...sadly though, also with no real "controllable" vehicles. Regardless, it was a great experience with fantastic graphics...and many innovations.->>> Enter Treyarch...and World at WarThe three prior COD titles were developed by InfinityWard (IW) for Activision and they were all "game of the year" level titles. During that same time period, Activision had Treyarch develop COD3 exclusively for consoles...and it paled in comparison. After COD4, Activision had Treyarch develop COD:WAW (World at War) for the PC, which seemed to be a thin repackaging of COD4:MW, but set back in WW2. The good news was that they added drivable tanks and generally made a fairly decent game...but we were all still looking to IW for innovation. Treyarch, not so much.->>> (Re)enter InifintyWard...and Modern Warfare 2The next part is long, but relevant to MW3...I promise.IW next developed COD:MW2 and fans of COD on the PC were shocked. It was clear that IW's strategy was to converge the console and PC versions to the greatest extent possible...forcing PCs to drop to the lowest common (console) denominator. As part of that strategy, they also dropped support for "dedicated servers." The impact of that decision cannot be understated. PC fans were incensed. They were now forced to deal with "lobbies" instead of dedicated servers. No longer could they just join their favorite server and see their friends and get to meet other new folks who frequented that server. Instead, the game randomly threw 12 or so folks together, made one the host, and threw you into a match...after numerous stutters and hiccups. A bogged down or lagging host could also ruin the game...and if that host quit, everything came to a screeching halt while the server attempted to migrate the host...or not.The bigger issue, however, was that no one in the game had administrative (rcon) access...so hackers ruled. Fans of previous COD multiplayer titles know that Punkbuster and VAC do very little to stop hacking. With dedicated servers, the server admins in game would deal with such obvious hackers...but in MW2, those hackers raged with impunity. Even if you were the host, there was little that you could do. I cannot count the number of times that I was forced out of a game because a hacking player was raging with an obvious aimbot...while the anti-cheat software was oblivious. The sad thing is that MW2 was fairly fun...even if it was mostly just a minor evolution of COD4:MW...but lack of dedicated servers killed it.->>> (Re)enter Treyarch...and Black OpsTreyarch stepped back up to the plate with COD:BO...and while it was once again a minor evolution of the franchise, dedicated servers were back. Well, sort of. You had to rent them from one provider and they were not very mod-able, but at least you could set game type, map rotation, and HAVE ADMIN ACCESS (i.e., rcon). Once again, hackers needed to run and hide...because they didn't last long on well-monitored servers.Yes, a minor evolution, but still a very good time. BO also supported "unranked" servers that supposedly supported modding, but frankly, most players ignored such servers...because they preferred to chase rank and "prestige". I won't get into why I think that including such ranks and prestige has killed modding, but suffice to say that you don't see the level of community modding and custom map creation that we did under UO and COD2. Oh well, MW3 is coming...and InifintyWard is creating this one...so it's got to be good...right?->>> WHERE WE ARE NOW: (Re)enter InfinityWard...and MW3 !!!I picked up MW3, installed it, and tried the single player campaign just to get a sense of the player physics. Controls largely the same? Check. Player physics the same? Check. Single player campaign pretending to be expansive but really very linear with far too many cut scenes? Check.Exit single player.Actually, to say the controls are the same is kind. "Lean" is missing...as it was with IW's MW2. Hmm. Now I am getting suspicious, but let's fire up multiplayer anyway and get it on.Wait. What the...?! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! LOBBIES ARE BACK!? ARGGGGGGGGGGGG!Yes, once again, lobbies are back. From clicking "play", it took about 4 minutes to get into a game...as lobbies were created and then destroyed...and created...and destroyed...and as soon as I got into a game, the host quit...and we came to a halt while the game tried to find a new host...which it could not...so we were all thrown back out into "lobby creation hell."Yes, lobbies...with all that statement implies, including no ability to have admins who can deal with hackers. But wait! MW3 supports dedicated servers.Yes, but not for ranked play...and if BO is any indication of the future, folks will not want to play unranked servers as they chase shiny little prestige icons. Of course, IW is not doing much to help this situation since for some bizarre reason they have disabled MW3's server browser by default. You have to hunt down a setting to turn it on.Seriously, I cannot believe this step backwards. Granted, it's not a step backwards for IW...it's a step forward from MW2. It's only a step backwards for the franchise (from Treyarch's BO).Is MW3 better than MW2? Seems to be. They added some innovations and are paying lip service to dedicated servers...but much of what they added over MW2 has no value in unranked dedicated server mode in MW3...so the folks who have labeled MW3 as MW 2.1 are pretty much dead on as far as I am concerned. So how are the lobby servers once you manage to get into a game? Well, I actually just got out of one where I was playing against a Prestige Level 10 Rank 80...less than 48 hours after release. Seriously...and guess who could see through walls and didn't care who knew it...and guess who couldn't do a darned thing about it?I could go on and review the MW3 gameplay and what IW added to MW2, but you can get that info from many sources, so I'll save you from more of my rambling. Instead, I just wanted to share a review of the PC experience for this title, which seems to get lost in the reviews of console versions. If nothing else, I hope that I help you avoid the surprise that I had when I fired up multiplayer. If you buy MW3, at least you can now go in with your eyes open.->>> Closing ThoughtsMW3 is a sequel to MW2...not Black Ops. We will have to wait and see what Treyarch offers next for a sequel to Black Ops.So is MW3 worth $60? Well, I'll leave that decision to each of you. It's definitely not a 1 star game, but it's also clearly not a 5 star game...at least on the PC.I suppose that what has really struck me in this experience is that for the first time I now no longer consider InfintyWard to be the king of the COD franchise...at least for those of us playing on the PC. Treyarch may actually now have the better vision. Yes, I know, IW leadership changed as the core folks left to go form Respawn Entertainment, but MW3 smells like their legacy regardless - i.e., a collapsed version for consoles and PCs...and everything in the game setup to motivate you to spend more to get DLC map packs, extra XP, and whatever else they can urge you to buy. Do they want a game with legs that can survive for years? Of course not...so in that respect, they knocked this one out of the park.->>> My adviceIf you love BF3 and COD generally annoys you, avoid this game. It will NOT win you over.If you love COD, well, you are going to buy it anyway, but at least I will offer you empathy...and I'll be on the battlefield next to you.If you are on the fence, try "Hello Kitty Island Adventure" instead. There are fewer weapons, but at least you won't feel as used and abused. Seriously though, stay on the fence, because I suspect that the price of this game is going to drop like a stone in the next two months.cheers,Scuba

1An embarassment even for the Call of Duty franchise.
By J. McGarvey
In order to understand how pointless the COD experience feels, it's important to note the lack of effort on the part of the sound department. Many times you will turn around and end up shooting a friendly in the back because you just can't hear what's going on. Even in the sneakiest parts you will hear nothing but a cacophany of enemy chatter and weapons sounds and those overpowered by a lumbering and anticlimactic musical score. Good luck hearing a footstep or even determining the direction of enemy fire. It's as if the mix team just mashed the sliders all the way up and let it be. The sounds that one would expect to drown out all others, such as your own weapon or a tank firing directly beside your ears, are barely perceptible in the mush of everything else.Because it's basically impossible to hear enemies, the simplest way to locate them is stand up in the open and wait until you start to get hit. Don't worry, apparently in COD world, bullets aren't lethal projectiles but merely wads of goo which slap you in the face, blurring your vision until you expire from blindness, so don't do this for too long.If you're waiting for a pickup, keep your head on a swivel, because that SF little bird will just ninja on down behind you without a sound, and you'll be waiting for something to happen only to turn around and find a silent helicopter just chilling there a meter away.Maybe it's unnecessary to expound upon, but graphically nothing has been done to this game for about four or five generations, so expect the same old same old as far as scenery. It may be that gamers feel a few 4 hour campaigns and some multiplayer kicks are well worth their $250 without any sort of development in terms of the actual game engine. Now I know the vast majority of gamers couldn't care less about inaccuracies so I won't begin a tirade expounding on COD's "unrealism" but as a former Recon operator I can tell you there are thousands of them.In addition to the lack of anything resembling realistic details, I found that with regards to scenario "preposterosity", COD takes the cake. As the Russian fleet attempts to displace the water of New York harbor by cramming as many boats as possible into the smallest area, your team takes a DPV ride down to an enemy submarine which is trying to fit into the Hudson to get its cruise missiles within range of California. After planting charges on the hull you detonate at a good safe distance of 5 meters, disabling the vessel. Fortunately for you, Navy SEALs are trained to absorb shock waves and turn them into large doses of awesome. As your team egresses via Zodiac, you weave in and out of the exploding Russian ships directly into the open hatch of a Chinook helicopter which is just hanging out in a few feet of water. No worries, we've got twin rotors---plenty of lift to handle a few tons of extra weight. Now, maybe some gamers will get a thrill out of performing such things, but I just couldn't stop laughing....and Operation One Man National Asset doesn't end there. The preposterous and impossible exploits just keep coming. One moment you jump from the 8th story onto the pavement and hop up to carry Soap away to safety... apparently he's just a weakling and is unable to shrug off such minor injuries. Another you fight your way through a large castle, placing three satchels from your bottomless rucksack, then end up driving over a cliff---but what's this? you just happen to have another full sized parachute on you---I wonder what pocket that one was hiding in...At this point most gamers no longer expect to be handed a spoonful of sugar with their daily Commercialized Electronic Babysitting Session, but as an old time PC gamer I'll have to wait my turn for the next Portal or Company of Heroes. As the average gamer progressively drops in intelligence and creativity, the battlefield hand-holding seemingly increases. While playing COD one feels simultaneously god-like and completely unnecessary. There are no choices whatsoever to make, and no tactical ability required to succeed. If this is your cup of tea, go rent "Commando" and you'll have both hands free to handle the doritos and beer. If not, and you are interested in an experience with a shred of mental stimulation, look to Valve or Relic for something worth your cash.Edit: I originally had written 6 hour campaign but looked at the menu and it said I had actually only spent 4 hours---and I'm the type who doesn't just sprint through games, I like to check out the scenery a bit too.

3Nothing new
By Jon
They should have called it MW2.1. The campaign is basically gunning down one alley after another. The helicopter always gets blown up. The enemy troops are scripted. Multiplayer is basically the same as MW2 with some major revamps of the kill streaks, ect. Lucky for them, I liked MW2 so I like this game, but quite frankly, I am going to bed now rather than playing because it just doesn't draw me in like it MW2 used to.

5Cute.
By Jane
I really enjoyed this Sims installment. Nah, it's not like the others, but it's really cute and fun to play. It's quest based, so don't expect to be able to just hop in and out of households as you please. Also, you're unable to choose quests after you finish a "motivation" for a kingdom. So it's.. very different! I am a hardcore player of all types of games, and it took me several kingdoms to get all the nuances of the game. So it's very complicated in comparison to other sims, but even if you DON'T know everything that's happening, it's still a lot of fun.The tutorial is.. totally necessary, though, so all you naysayers will learn a new reason to be enraged once you escape it and have no clue what's going on.Anyhow, I like it. Gameplay is smooth, it's fun to balance, still pleasantly addictive, but not based on needs.. and you don't feel that inclination to cheat all the time like you do in the traditional Sims games.

4A whole different (good) game.
By reameth
This game deserves a good rating for being an original remake of the classical SIMS. It takes elements of questing across a static map, similar to the game mechanics of Heroes of Might and Magic and combines it with the nature of the SIMS game play. It is a niche in its own right.Basically, the game centers around nine hero characters you can customize. Each hero represents a certain class or job type and their day to day tasks and quests will differ based on it. A knight will do things like sharpen his sword, practice on the dummy, patrol the forests, duel a challenger. A blacksmith will make metal-forged items. A physician or healer will perform surgery, attend to his patients and craft tonics and salves. A monarch will attend court and hear petitions, write new laws, sign treaties or hunt down a great bear. A mage will craft potions, memorize spells, gather herbs. A bard will write poems, gather inspiration, write plays, play his lute and perform on stage. A spy will craft poisons, eavesdrop, make secret drops, pickpocket, break someone from the gallows. A Peteran and Jacoban priest will convert villagers, bless them, hold sermons. Each of these nine heroes have different duties. Everyday at 9AM there are tasks they must fulfill before the end of the day to maintain a focus bar. The focus affects their mood or how they perform their duties. Someone with low focus can fail at tasks such as fishing, crafting, surgery. hunting. This is also coupled with the main quest on the story. Every quest has one or two heroes that must complete story-line quests while completing their daily tasks. Ignoring their daily tasks might result in low focus that will adversely affect the completion of the quest.Every hero can advance ten levels. Every level offers new benefits; stronger fighting skills, more spells, more tonics, more recipes. All the while, you can use money earned from main quest completion and day to day activities to upgrade and decorate each hero's living quarters. Heroes can marry each other, have kids, marry non playable characters (NPCS). You can expand your kingdom and annex with other kingdoms which opens up new kingdom specific quests. Each new kingdom that is annexed will offer additional bonuses such as more xp and gold per quest completed, longer time for a hero to ignore his main quest before being sent to the gallows and so on. Each quest has the option to approach it from different view points depending on the hero chosen. A quest of an evil witch for instance; the monarch can opt to marry her, the mage can opt to fight magic with magic, the knight can opt to fight her with brute force. This is just a brief skim of what the game is about. It is original, fresh, much better and has more re-playability than the classical SIMS prototype game.

5A great, new spin on the Sims! :]
By MDR1994
The Sims Medieval is a really fun, newly styled Sims game.Instead of doing your daily tasks of waking up, cooking lunch, going to work, going to school, etc... You actually have a daily set of tasks to complete. It's a lot like Runescape in a way. It's a medieval setting, and you choose from a list of quests to do every day. It's a really new spin on the average Sims game. I was getting sick of the same old same old routine, so I checked in to this game and was instantly surprised by how fun it is!You start off the game by creating your "monarch" of the kingdom. You control your queen/king for the first couple quests, and rack up your Quest Points and Resource Points. Using the Quest Points, you can "purchase" different quests. Using the Resource Points (RP), you can purchase new destinations within your kingdom - which opens up various other playable characters (ex. Bard, Knight, Spy, Jacoban Priest...)If you are interested in continuing with the Sims, but in a whole different setting, this is the game for you! It offers a new view of the Sims. Some of the negatives, i'd say, are the limits to the clothing you get to choose from (and hairstyles!) - Also, you miss out on other daily things like Hygiene, Bladder, Entertainment, etc. which used to provide a nice moodlet for your Sim. But all in all, it's worth it!

2Expensive DLC

I don't know about you, but I'm not up for paying $20 for another few maps and a new weapon! Amazon sent me a coupon for $20 off, because I purchased Crysis 2 from them. Still, it's a ridiculously overpriced product.

5You had me at pipe bomb...
By Terry Mesnard
When Left 4 Dead 2 was announced about six months after the first game came out, a lot of people were shocked for a few reasons. It's Valve and Valve is notorious for taking their sweet time releasing quality games, was one reason. And then there was the more important question. Was this a cash grab? Is it merely an expansion pack masquerading as a fully priced game? And now it's released and the answer to the above questions is evident: Left 4 Dead 2 had me at "improved pipe bomb."But you're not here to listen to me go on about how cool the pipe bomb is and how awesome the changed effects of zombie bodies literally exploding through the air is. At least I hope not. The fact is, after playing through Left 4 Dead 2, the original game feels more like a blueprint. Everything that was in L4D is in the sequel, but the sequel is a completely different beast. I was surprised, when we played through the opening campaign "Dead Centre" just how varied and improved the game was. You begin at the top of a hotel, bringing to mind the small apartment complex that began the first game. Except that this time, there's a whole lot more. You see, the building is on fire, you can create backdrafts through doors, and the entire event feels more context driven than...well, than the entire first game.Fire will cause impromptu passages, forcing you to discover different ways through the crumbling building. This means sometimes climbing out a window and balancing precariously on a ledge, moving from window to window in your escape. The intensity is further exasperated by the introduction of the special infected. Imagine playing this in Versus as a Jockey, hopping onto one of the survivors and moving them off the edges or being a Spitter and spitting the goo at just the right moment. Moving through the hotel, the fire increases and eventually, smoke will cloud your vision, creating an extremely claustrophic even where zombies charge out of the dense, dark smoke or other zombies, wearing hazmat suits, will simply rush, unharmed, through the flames at you. This diversity continues as you race through the chapters. In the first campaign alone, you will race through a burning hotel, tear through a grocery store in search for cola to bring back to a crazed, holed up hermit so he'll destroy a barricade and eventually reach the climax where you have to locate gas cans (like in the new mode) to gas up a car to escape. The thing is, that's only the tip of the iceberg. Later campaigns like "Dark Carnival" add a bit of whimsy as you can play some of the carnival games (kudos to Valve for bringing back the Half Life 2 gnome for an achievement), race up and down a roller coaster as zombies chase endless after you, and eventually reach the end which culminates in an inspired ending scenario that's completely different (and a tad whimsical) than anything else in the game. This diversity only continues through the later campaigns as well, with "Hard Rain" being my absolute favorite. In "Hard Rain," as you move through the maps, it starts raining harder and harder. It's by far the most atmospheric and most interesting, since you eventually have to backtrack through the zones, but this time they are flooded and the weather adds a completely different challenge to the map. Additionally, unlike the first game where the campaigns all felt a bit too similar, resulting in my group relying on a couple campaigns we liked the most, each campaign offers so many differences, that I find myself wanting to replay them over and over. With five fully-developed campaigns, there's a lot more content than in the original game. Also, if you're feeling especially masochistic, try turning on the Realism mode which gets rid of the glowy outlines around survivors and ammo, makes infected harder to kill (headshots, please) and gets rid of the spawning closets...And that doesn't take into account the other features. Of course, there's Versus and Survival Modes like in the original game, but L4D2 also throws in Scavenge. Scavenge essentially is L4D2's version of a capture the flag mode, with the myriad of gas cans being flags. The survivors race around the map, fighting both the infected and the clock, trying to get as many gas cans to start a generator as possible. Meanwhile, the infected obviously try to stop them. What I love about Scavenge is that it's not the time commitment that Versus is. It's a quick best of three or five game that ratchets up the tension and can create some truly inspired situations. My only complaint about this mode is that there's only one per campaign right now. Ditto the Survival mode which doesn't seem to have as many maps as in the original Left 4 Dead. Hopefully Valve rectifies this with DLC.After you get past the myriad of modes and campaigns, there's still more tiny additions that made me smile. Guns are now strewn across the level and you won't find conveniently placed groups of weapons that contain everything. The guns also have a lot more variety, with a few different options for each type of weapon (I really enjoy the combat shotgun). The newly introduced melee weapons are interesting. In lower difficulties, they are seemingly overpowered; however, as you start to play on expert, I've found their limitations to be too great. Still, a nice additional and some of them are fantastic: taking down a witch with a chainsaw is perfection. The two grenade types return as does vials of Boomer bile. This operates under the same concept as the pipe bomb, except that the undead will race to the impact point and try to destroy whatever's there...like a Tank. Not that they will destroy a Tank, but they do provide some assistance. Then there's the other miscellaneous items, like defibrillators that will bring back dead party members. And I haven't even talked about the characters and story. I do miss the original gang of archetypical characters; I miss Frank's acerbic comments ("I hate vans...") and the camaraderie they had. But the new gang is also better developed and their banter is fresh and entertaining as they move through the campaigns, which, by the way, feel a lot more connected and there's more story here. So here's the thing. Those who didn't care for Left 4 Dead will probably not be swayed by L4D2 because it offers more of what the first one did. It's not a radically different game, it just feels...more complete. When I blasted through the first game, I wanted more...I felt like I played through a blueprint of a fantastic game. L4D2 delivers on that promise. It's not an expansion, it's a great, new, longer and better game.Very much recommended for fans of the original.

4Everything the first l4d should've been.
By Thomas Cila
This game is very violent, very bloody and gory. But it's a game where you're killing zombies, what do you expect? That being said, what a game, what a game. It's all I can say about this. To sum this up, this is an over the top, intense, first person zombie shooter that's everything that the first left 4 dead should have been.First, the setting, stories, characters, etc.So this time around you're playing in a southern area, around Louisiana, Mississippi, etc. which brings with it, it's own character. There's a famous southern rock band, the midnight riders, for instance and in one level, the ending fight scene takes place at a concert of there's where you can battle against zombies amidst the fireworks and light show that the stage provides. There's also a famous race car driver, and one level you're busy gassing up his stock car (at a car show) so you can drive it and get the heck out of there. But no, you sadly wont be doing any driving. It's a great ending to see the car bash through a bunch of zombies however. You get the idea..This time around, you're not playing 4 separate sort of "movies". The chapters are, at least somewhat, connected. Like when you drive out from the ending of one chapter, the next chapter, the car has broken down, and now you're on foot. The characters, wow, what a change. Part of me misses the old l4d characters, like bill, and zoe.. but these new ones are so full of great humor and character it's quite a tossup. There's Nick, who doesn't really "belong" in the south. He's very more of a serious, almost like a business man from the north. However, he's actually just a gambler and a conman, oh wait, what's the difference? I'm kidding! But seriously, he's always making jokes about the "south".There's Rochelle, who's a news reporter, she's kind of an in between character, not too funny, not too serious imo. Then there's Ellis and Coach. Ellis is a mechanic, and coach is well, a coach. They're always full of jokes and wisecracks and can really bring a laugh, or at least a chuckle around every now and then.Ok so enough about that, lets get down to the nitty gritty. This game is extremely over the top and I mean that, whole heartily. But it fits well here and provides a new layer to the l4d world. For instance, there's new melee weapons, there's normal things like you would expect. Like an axe, a sword, a baseball bat, a chainsaw... But there's also others like a guitar, or a..... frying pan and I must say, there's something oddly funny about smashing a zombie over the head with a frying pan and hearing that comical clang afterwards. With all the melee weapons, they're basically 1 hit kills to the normal zombies and will usually involve some sort of dismemberment. Even if you're using a guitar, if you hit a zombie at the head, it's gonna fly. However, you have to be careful as it's extremely easy to damage friends nearby with these.Speaking about that, you can take a whole new world of hurt to the zombies. There's a new system in place that allows you to... well, lets put it this way.. if you shoot a zombie in the back, part of his back goes missing. You can blow off a part of the zombies head, if you slice with an axe or sword you can leave some nasty gashes in the torso. You can literally blow a zombie to bits, like with the grenade launcher and pipebomb. Sometimes after the explosion if you take the time to look you'll see bits of arms, legs, some intestines, whatever. It's pretty violent, pretty brutal, pretty fun. If this was happening in another game, and you weren't killing zombies... There'd probably be a ton of people freaking out. It'd be like an extremely violent game, even more so than the soldier of fortune games... But since you're killing zombies, it's actually quite fun. Also, to quote game informer, "At one point an explosion propelled a zombie over m head with its intestines trailing behind it like a party streamer." oh and if you attack zombies with melee weapons blood splashes up on your screen, it's a neat effect and doesn't really get in the way.The melee weapons takes place of your secondary weapon, so you can still keep your primary firearm, whatever it may be. There's plenty of new ones this time around as well. The guns this time around are much more real. It seems as though they took their time modeling and animating these guns to their real life counterparts. There's an ak47, something that resembles a scar, you've got a much more modernized semi-automatic rifle equipped with sights for some nice sniping action, there's m16's, there's shotguns, uzi's, tmp's, grenade launchers, etc. Whatever you pick, you're probably going to like it. It just FEELS right, it feels like a gun in the game, not a toy. There's also "laser sights" you can pick up that increase accuracy (I don't know why it would, but oh well), there's also new rounds you can put into your favorite firearm. You can use incendiary rounds, explosive rounds and they're a blast. Literally. There's a limited amount, so when you get them you only have like 40 or so in your primary weapon. There's the new uncommon common zombies. Like the zombies in hazmat suits, or zombies in riot gear that are bulletproof unless you shoot them from the back. They add a little more fun and break up the monotony. There's also, this time around, 6 special infected (Not including the witch). There's the spitter (One of my favorites) that spits out a pile of acidic goo that does quite a bit of damage. There's the charger that runs into the survivors and will grab one of them and keep slamming him/her into the ground until he, or the survivor dies. There's also revamped versions of the special infected from the first l4d. There's the boomer, smoker, hunter and tank. All of the special infected have a new look that fits this game very well and I definitely prefer it to the original (Except the hunter and tank they basically look the same). The sounds the special infected make are also much improved. The boomer for instance sounds much more gross and nasty and it's GREAT!The campaign is much better this time around, the levels are much more detailed and fun although they're much more open and they aren't as linear. There's been a few times on the first play through where I was scratching my head trying to figure out where to go mainly because I ran past where I was supposed to go when I was busy killing zombies and ended up slightly lost. But it's such a vast improvement, the environments are much more fun as well. One level where you play in a fair type setting, there's a roller-coaster that you send and it runs into zombies on the track, and I believe it was Ellis who says "These zombies don't respect lines" or something of the sort. But there's still a lot carried over from l4d, you still have the same matchmaking service, it still looks like l4d, it's slightly improved especially with a lot of the effects, like fire, explosions, etc. but it's not going to blow you away. However, there's new modes. There's the normal campaign and versus but...There's the realism setting, which removes any glows and I haven't seen a real difficulty increase, even on expert. It just seems more visual, but I could be wrong. I haven't played it much. There's the survival setting which basically pits you against wave after wave of zombies. There's the scavenge mode that has you do something like hunting for fuel to keep something filled while fighting off a ton of zombies. It can get quite intense or frustrating haha. All that said, I have had a few problems with this game, it's crashed a few times. Although, it's odd. Usually when a game or anything crashes, you'd get a popup, some sort of an error, at least it might help you in figuring out what happened, whats wrong. But I never get anything, the game just closes and that's it. It's happened in single and multiplayer so I'm not sure what's going on and it's also happened to other people so I know it's not just me.There's also, of course, people. People you play with on multiplayer, it doesn't matter who or what. There's always going to be something, of course this isn't the games fault. But it's something to be aware of, quite a bit of people I play with, whether it's pubs or pugs, they're pretty decent. But there's always that one game, with that "one" person that just completely ruins everything. Like for instance, this guy "MorganFreeman911" would blame EVERYTHING on me, even when it was HIS fault. Like if I was shooting at a bunch of zombies and he'd run into straight into it, it was my fault. If he ran into a witch and got killed, it was my fault. You get the picture. It's people like that, that can really ruin a fun experience. If you're playing with someone like that, it's usually best to just leave, find a different game, and be on your merry way.But all in all it's a very fun game and HOPEFULLY they'll release some DLC later on that'll add to the longevity of this game, because I do like this.As time goes on, I'll update this review if needed. I hope it was helpful!

2PC single player's review
By Randym
Like others, I was disappointed to find that this was a Steam game. When you buy a boxed game, you don't expect to have to download it. While I realize Steam has advantages, it's really a pain in some situations. Believe it or not, not everyone has Internet access all the time. Some of us take our laptops on the road, even overseas, where there may be no Internet access, or high roaming charges. It's more than a little aggravating to have to get online to get permission to play a game you bought. The game itself is interesting enough. The zombies and weapons are cool, the graphics very nice. However, you can't save your game. I found this a fatal flaw. You should be able to save your game, rather than being forced to wait until it autosaves at the end of a campaign.

5A lot more content then you might think
By Redwaltz
Some people keep complaining about the lack of content in this expansion pack, calling it a "glorified stuff pack". There is actually quite a lot more there than one might think. Therefore, since someone asked me to post this, here is a pretty nice list of what you can expect to find in this pack:This list was not compiled by me, but by a Sims fan-site [...]' There is not a new town for Generations. The town shown in photos and videos is Sunset Valley.' There are 10 new community lots added to Generations.' They have not added any new Rabbit Holes. (Still unknown if they have opened any existing ones)' One of the new community lots added is a Playground complete with a Sandbox, Swing set, Seesaw, Playhouse Set, Spring-Rides, and a Treehouse(?)Sims & CAS' Body hair is a feature that has been added to CAS' New accessory for Elders: CanesBuild Mode Features' Spiral Staircases' New type of WindowNew Objects' Usable Strollers to transport your toddlers. One per stroller. For more than one child, multiple strollers will have to be used with other sims pushing them.' Bunk Beds and Loft Beds which can be used by Sims of all ages' Tree-houses' New Playground equipment' Sandbox' Water Slide which can be used by all ages (Slip n Slide) not a pool slide.' Video Camera' Chemistry Set to make lots of new potions' Sleeping bags' Children's toy boxes have been improved with costumes so kids can play dress up.' Pink Limousines' Costume chest' Different sized picture frames' Lava LampsNew Interactions,Features & Events' Children and teenagers can play pranks on strangers, neighbors, and even other family members.' The Sims 3 Generations has two kinds of mischief: Traps and Pranks in public places' Pranks & Traps include: booby traps, Water balloons, covering a neighbor's house in toilet paper (or TP'ing), Stink Juice (bombs), Flaming bag of poo, Ding Dong ditch, adding hair dye to shampoo, Throwing eggs, making the toilet explode, pouring buckets of water from the tree-house onto someone, messing with the sink to make it spray someone when they attempt to turn it on and whoopee cushions under the sofa!' "Ninja Vanish-Potion" is used to disappear from the scene of a prank. Chemistry skill required to make the potion.' Children & Teens can be grounded for mischief, have a timeout or have their video games banned.' Pranks can contribute to your teen's social standing and will actually let you build up a reputation as a master prankster and local legend to the other kids at school.' Children can sleep outside in their backyard and tell ghost stories. (Flashlight included!)' Stories will effects how your sim sleeps at night.' Sims can now have Nightmares.' Children can have sleepovers and slumber parties!' Children can dress up and be a "King or Queen" and reign over their subjects.' Sims keep memories, so you can go back and review your Sims' milestones when you feel like reminiscing. Memories of significant life moments will be recorded in their Scrapbook.' Adult Mid-Life Crises' Pillow Fights have returned!' Older Sims can interact with toddlers now by performing "claw" movements while in their arms. (most likely an add-on to tickling)' Children can now have pirate attacks in their Tree-houses. A skull and crossbones flag is hoisted above the tree house, it hisses and pops on the inside and fire and smoke emerge from the windows.' Children can now have Sci-Fi adventures in their Tree-houses. They dress as astronauts and UFO's appear.' Children can now have "clubhouse" type adventure in Tree-houses where they spy on neighbors through a telescope to see what others are up to!' If your sims decide to throw a wild party. a police car may show up! But don't be fooled as they are not real cops! They are there to add to the parties atmosphere.' Grown-ups can now have elaborate bachelor and bachelorette parties before marriage, which include all manner of festivities like pink limousines, sexy dancers and plenty of "nectar".' Bachelor parties, will include hiring a female "dancer" to pop out of a wedding cake and spray the lucky bachelor with a bottle of "nectar".' Parents have the ability to send children and teens to different boarding schools. They can choose anything from military school to the sports academy, and has plenty to choose from to give their children a proper education! This happens outside our current world.' Children won't go to college specifically, but what they will do are the following: Children can go on field trips now. Field trips are really cool. It is not just a new way of going with the community as they sometimes bring special things back from these field trips and have them in their memories.' Teens will be able to have a Graduation and a party for it. (no details given on how a graduation will work)' Teens can have prom dances. They will be able to take their date and go to the prom and they'll take their picture at the school. You can hang these pictures at home on their walls so they can remember this day and how it was like for them. Of course if they got prom king or prom queen - that's a very special moment for them.' New parties include: Teenage parties, graduation parties and bachelor/ette parties! They have also added new fun interactions to weddings such as the "Wedding Arch" and "Cake Cutting"' Sims can now have Dates.' Adult sims can Woohoo in the shower and in Tree-houses. In tree-houses, you'll see the adults climbing up in there and the tree house is shaking. Leaves falling down off of it and birds will fly of the tree house .' Not only can your Sims record home videos of their children growing up, but they can take the Data Discs out of the camera and replay their home movies on most of the in-game TV screens!' Sims can view the world from the video's perspective while they record events around them.' Sims are now able to record home movies, or even tape unsuspecting victims to use the footage as evidence (blackmail)' Sims now have the ability to gift flowers and boxed gifts.' Sims will now be able to stargaze from the ground.' Hopscotch' Children can attend ballet classNew Traits/Skills' Nurturing' Rebellious' These traits are not specific to any one life phase in the game, but they'll provide different benefits to Sims throughout their lifespan!' As of now we do not know of any new "exact" skills such as cooking that can be improved, but making potions with the chemistry set is something to improve on.Careers/Professions' Day Care profession' Parents can take their children to Day Care at a specific time, which is an at-home daycare. How many children will your Sim be able to handle? An additional challenge is that children with rebellious ways might anger you with their antics. Having the "Nurturing" trait is a plus for this job.' Sims have this new "Nurturing" trait. Sims with this new trait will be great in taking care of other kids; they can interact with them in a special way. It's a very active career. You have to guide your Sims through these experiences to help them advance. So other Sims bring by their kids and drop them off and you have to take care of them. As you progress through it, it gets more difficult - you may even have a problem child. They're going to pull pranks and get in trouble more often. But you make sure that you take care of them like they are your own kid. And as you keep going you will have more and more children and have the ability to manage them.' Ambitions careers have been expanded.Lifestate/Creature' Imaginary Friends' This fantasy creature with a fancy pants suit, different pairs of shoes and a glowing "light bulb" on the head, moves strangely. An imaginary friend stems from a doll which a child tends to nurture. Once the doll has turned into an imaginary friend, many new interactions become available.' Only the sim with an imaginary friend can see them. Other sims will not be able to see someone else's imaginary friend. This will be odd seeing a pillow fight or a child on a seesaw with no one else in view!' You will only be able to see the imaginary creature when the sim who created it is selected.' Using a special potion, sims can turn their imaginary friends into a "Real" sim.' Imaginary friends can perform actions that sims can. For example if you have to tidy up the house just ask your imaginary friend to do it!' Sims can have romantic interests with imaginary friends when they become teens. This romance can continue into adulthood.' Interacting with an imaginary friend, fills the social bar and gap for your sims.Extras' Collections (explained below)' We now have this new filter in buy/build mode, where you click on it and select the icon of what product you want to see. So if you bought "Generations" and you just want to see the objects from "Generations" you click that icon and that's the only ones you will see. But it's a dynamic system. If you have "Late Night" as well you can click both of them you will see only objects from both of those. So you can show just the objects that you want.' We will now be able to Upload Screenshots and Memories to our My-Page & Facebook.

4Another good expansion pack from The Sims!
By Mickbeatle
The Sims 3: Generations is the fourth expansion pack the the Sims 3 series and I must say, it's pretty good. I got it on the day of its release via Amazon. Now I'm no game reviewer as I'm more of a music reviewer (aspiring music journalist here) but I'll try my best to describe this game. Like with most expansion packs for the Sims, make sure you got your favorite families or games backed up on CD-Rs or whatever you back them up on. I've been doing this since Ambitions came out a year ago since I learned the hard way when one of the sims in my family wasn't moving. Alright, now to the game itself. The theme for this expansion pack revolves around the idea of life and growing up. I found this interesting for EA to base an entire expansion pack on. What about the users who like having one sim families? Well, I guess you would get some things out of the new objects. If you're a user who likes to make families and have them go on and on, this might be the expansion pack for you. Your sims will get to keep memories of their lives (examples: Marriage, birth of a child, death, first kiss, prom etc). If you can remember in the Sims 2, your sims did get to have memories. This takes that idea and expands it. Memories can also be shared through the Sims 3 website and even Facebook! The only negative with the memories feature is that it may get annoying after a while. Also, I found this to be a bit funny: after you install the game, your sims will experience their "firsts" in just about anything. For example, my teenage sims, just about to be a young adult, kept his memory of his first day in school (when I know it isn't because he's been to school plenty of times before this expansion pack was released!).New features are built around sims for all ages but for some reason, I feel like most of them are targeted for child and teen sims. For child sims, they'll get to have a bunch of new things such as see-saws, slip n slides, tree houses, and other things. There's also the interesting addition of imaginary friends. When your sim is just born, they will receive a gift in the mail. Its a doll, which you can give a name and have your toddler sim play with. As your sim grows up, so does your imaginary friend, based on your relationship. I'm also reading that if you keep a good relationship with your imaginary friend, they can have the chance to become real! For teen sims, they'll get to go to prom and even graduate high school. However, there's one disadvantage here with being a teen sim: teen sims can't automatically drive anymore! They have to now ask their parents for lessons! The lessons don't take very long (like 3 skill points to complete). As for other sims, there's a new chemistry set like thing. You can make potions that can help or hurt your sims. Your sims can also give other sims gifts, which is nice to see return! These are just a couple of things you can do with The Sims 3: Generations. So far, I'm enjoying it. When you get it and open the case, you might be a little disappointed: there's still no $10 card for the online store, which is easy to get over. However, the booklet that comes with the game is barely even a booklet. I think the same goes for the Outdoor Living stuff pack: it just comes with an installation guide. Personally, the booklets have helped me and seeing this removed is sad. Still, The Sims 3: Generations is a great addition to the Sims 3 series.

3Another nice addition to an already great game...
By A. N. Heimdal
--- Edit - March 5th 2012 ---To this date I still can't get this game to work properly. But that's because EA doesn't support my video card anymore. EA didn't tell me this but I had to find the information myself. Below is a list of sites/pages that have been very helpful to me. I do not guarantee that this site has the help you need. This site has a lot of information about The Sims 3. Everything from common technical issues to creating custom content:[...]The page (part of the above listed site) is a break down of system requirements and have been a great help to me. It lists most common video cards and will tell you if they work or not: [...]This page has information of technical/graphic issues and how the fix them: [...]--- end edit ----This game gives you more then a Stuff Pack but less then an Expansion Pack. While it is similar to a normal Stuff Pack--new objects, clothes, interactions/activities--it's lacking in new neighborhoods and only has one new job/profession ((that I've found))--Daycare Provider. I'm not sure what this job entails as I haven't tried it yet. It should be similar to the other professions (fire fighter, hair stylist...). Possibly meaning working in a daycare center or having an at-home service.A new feature allows you to adjust the length of the age stages--baby, toddler, child, young adult, adult and elder. I love this feature. I thought it took too long for babies (3 days) and toddlers (7 days) to age. Now you can shorten or lengthen to your preference. You can also dictate how long your sims will live in total (preset at 90 days). This feature is accessible through the options menu. This game offers more towards young sims--more objects, clothing, interactions, ect. You can tell your young sim what to dream about by clicking the bed while they're sleeping. Some dreams come true and some turn into nightmares. Teens can go to prom and become prom king/queen. Young sims can play pranks and have bad/moody days. Sims now have graduation (once they've aged to young adult) where they have a chance at valedictorian, being voted more popular, ect. Teens now have to learn to drive. There are more 'Wohoo' options now for grown-up sims. And for the elders--canes/walking sticks--wow, that's the best EA can do, really? As mentioned by others, memories are back but with a twist. You can now share your sims' memories online such as Facebook. I like the memory feature but not the share. I highly doubt my friends and family care if my sim gains a skill point or marries. Luckily, you can turn off the share notices in the option menu.Installation was smooth. The EA Download Manager didn't install properly the first attempt but did on the next try when I restarted my computer. Otherwise, I haven't noticed any installation or game play issues. A hiccup or two but nothing that really affects game play.Overall, a nice addition to the great game of The Sims 3. But I'm a little disappointed. I was expecting more. I think EA could have done more with this game. Sorry EA but you really seem to be letting your standards drop for $$$. And I've been a fan since Simcity first came out on the SNES--I miss Simfarm.***UPDATE 6/4/11***I lied. The game is now crashing. It started to glitch with freezing every few minutes and one sim kept pop out of activities such as using a bed, bathing, ect. Then my pre-Generation sims became unplayable and frozen. I couldn't even click on them. Sims acquired after installing Generations seemed okay. Now the game is AMAZINGLY slow and freezes every few seconds. All this started after I sent a sim to Egypt. Upon returning home the game began to glitch...I'm trying to work this out with EA customer service...***UPDATE 6/29/11***The only things that fixed those glitched was to uninstall and reinstall. Unfortunately, that was only a temporary fix. Back talking to EA tech support and they're giving me the run around. If someone has had similar issues and know how to fix them please let me know.***UPDATE 7/12/11***After two weeks dealing with tech support they finally admitted to having a known issue with the game. They are working on a patch but don't know when it'll be out. Go, EA! I now have a game that's crashing/freezing and don't know when they'll fix it. Teaches me for buying an EA products new. Back to waiting a few months, and then only to by used.
