5Easy to play, hard to master, always fun.
By Jason Kleeberg
My bias:Loves: Bloody video gamesLikes: Zombie/Horde modesDislikes: 2D gamesHates: Short gamesI had never played the first Shank, so this is coming from a fresh perspective. I don't know what issues the original had, but this one really doesn't have any. This is a typical 2D shooter (think Contra), but it's ultra bloody and surprisingly deep. There are six or seven single player levels and the boss fights are pretty difficult and very fun. However, this game shines in the multi-player.The multi-player is basically your typical 'horde' mode...buy items to help with different rounds of different types of enemies...but it's really deep (unlockable characters galore) and with a friend is a blast. Choose your character based on their strengths and weaknesses and go nuts. I could spend hours with this type of game.Score: 5 stars.

This is one of those games I decided to take a chance on. I couldn't find any reviews or game ratings, but the screen-shots made it look so appealing, and I loved the concept - lead the farm animals to your mother-ship without maiming or killing them - who wouldn't be intrigued by that!? ;) But after downloading the game and playing it for about an hour I have to say I am disappointed.First of all, it took about 20 minutes for me to be able to adjust the settings to even get the game to show on my widescreen monitor without it being distorted. And I still can't get the mouse to work on the menu screens (nor can I find anything out on the internet regarding this issue). The game controls are very difficult, because you either use the keyboard, or the mouse (which is the spaceship), or both. And it seems no matter which way I adjust the sensitivity of controls it's still not precise. So it becomes very frustrating when you need the ship to slowly move in a certain direction to keep the animals from running off the cliff but it does the complete opposite and you have to start the level over. So after some time of being unable to advance due to shoddy control manipulation I had to consider the game unplayable and haven't opened it up since.I gave it two stars for neat graphics and cute concept, but I sure wish I could have money back.

5All drivers to your cars...
By Strategos
There are racing simulators, and then there are racing GAMES. I read a preview and an interview in two issues of Edge magazine discussing the new direction Codemasters was taking in this game, and by the time I finished the preview I was so exited I knew I had to preorder the game and make the first full-price purchase I've ever made of a 360 game. The reason is simple. As one of the game's creators said, the racing genre has become a collect-a-thon with very little to do with the joy of racing. We've come to invest massive amounts of time into things like Forza and Gran Turismo without actually enjoying the races, just trying to win enough money to buy that next car or rank high enough to unlock that next track. The Race Driver series, like the Colin McRae Rally series, has been trying to gain a foothold in the west for some time. Personally I have no problem with TOCA or Rally (I love every Colin McRae game I've played except, strangely, Dirt), but everyone else seems to need some convincing. Codemasters have been trying to do this for years by throwing all kinds of crazy modes at you in the Race Driver series. With Grid maybe they'll finally get your attention. The first thing you will probably notice is the graphics engine that powers this game (the same one from Dirt). These are next next NEXT generation graphics. Flags wave in the breeze, crowds cheer and jump up and down, and huge clouds of smoke shoot from your tires when you spin your tires. At the starting line, there is a fog of exhaust from the idling cars. But when you start racing, you realize that everything is also faster than greased lightning, giving you that sense of speed previously only seen in the movies. When I first played the demo, the impression I got was that the developers watched The Fast and the Furious, Gone in 60 Seconds, and bunch more like them, and said "We need our game to look, move, and feel like THAT." Just before the race starts the camera does a lightning-fast zoom to the cars from an overhead view. On the replays, the camera shakes and rattles like it's a helicopter shot tracking your car, and your car is itself has the shake and blur of an object rocketing along at incredible speed. Nothing like the Sunday driver replays we've all become accustomed to. The sense of speed is really fantastic, and the game's controls will at first take some getting used to, because the cars are far more controllable than you are probably used to (resulting in a lot of spin-outs and wall-slams because you aren't expecting to turn so sharp). What this translates to is that when you get used the feel of this game it's a non-stop thrill ride as your car flies around corners and takes off from a stop like something out of a forth of July blockbuster. And let's not forget about the car deformation and physics engine. While I don't think it's possible to land upside down, I have wedged my car on top of wals, flipped end over end, spun my car 360 degrees in the air, and smashed my car till all that remained of the front was the engine (and I can't count the times I've seen my wheels fly off). Yes, this game has damage, and it's way better than the damage in any other game I know of. It's not realistic, but it is TOUGH. If you have a head-on collision at top speed, that's it. Your car is wrecked. Fortunately the new Rewind feature makes it possible to stop time and rewind to before the crash (ala Prince of Persia's innovative time-control system). Is it a cheap gimmick? No. It's a really cool feature and an absolute lifesaver. But of course, it also demishes your score, can only be used a certain number of times, and in higher difficulty settings and record score making can't be used at all. Think of it like the ideal line in Forza. It may be cheating, but it's a game, not real life. And there's no point in playing a game if you can't have fun. And a whole lot of fun Grid is.The A.I. in the game is also quite good, and not just because cars keep slamming into you and trying to force you off the road (in a couple of races one or two of the leaders kept trying to block the road to keep me from passing and when I got ahead harassed me continually from behind). The other drivers will actually fight each other, spin out, and crash all on their own. This makes everything enormously exciting because it stops feeling like you're racing a computer that never makes mistakes and instead feels like you're racing a wild pack of drivers jockeying for position (thankfully more Speed Racer and Nascar). Realism freaks will cry foul, but people like me who are TIRED of realism getting in the way of having fun will love the atmosphere of the races, where you feel rivalry and desperation in every race, and know that you could go from last to first or vice versa at any time (making every race feel like one of the greastest you've ever seen on TV, because crazy comebacks and smash-ups at the finish line do ocassionally happen in real-life).While most racing games stick with one mode, Grid has you doing all kind of crazy races, from destruction derby to drift challenges, to one-on-one mountain racing. You'll drive Formula 3, Super cars, and muscle cars. You'll drive everywhere from Long Beach to Le Mans. While I wish there were more tracks (I loved the destruction derby and wish there were a few more of my favorite European tracks), the limited car selection doesn't bother me at all, because all the cars are fast and fun and very usable. Similarly I'm GLAD there's no car tweaking and tuning because in the end it just distracts from RACING. Leave that adjustment stuff to my mechanic, thank you very much. The sound in this game is roaring, from tire screeches to the turbine-engine whine of your formula 3 at high rpms. The crashes and crunches come perfectly and the music is upbeat and heart-racing. There's also a manager and Crew Chief who talk to you through the game offering advice, and even address you by name (when you create your profile, you select what they should call you from a list). The only real snag I've hit so far is the unbalanced difficultly in the events. I can pretty much always hit a podium finished in the United States races, but the European track courses are REALLY hard, as is getting anything other than last place in Le Mans 24 hour (which in a really cool move is 24 minutes long). If playing on Easy meant I could always get at least 10th place I would have no complaints. There you have it. This is the game everyone's been waiting for. There's fast and furious racing action with the best replays in history. Glorious graphics at lightning speed, roaring sound with good music (for the first time in a racing game since I can remember), cool commentary as you race that addresses you by name (how cool is that!?), awesome physics and A.I. that results in cars trying to push you off the road and crazy smash-up crashes, and fun, fun, FUN racing events with lots of variety. If you love racing games you need to buy this one.

5It's a crime that this game isn't more famous
By John Paquette
After playing this game for several hours, I slipped Forza Motorsport III into my XBox 360 to compare. Forza seemed shockingly tame by comparison. Forza's visuals seem artificially pretty, and they seem to be locked to a rock-steady tripod. By contrast, GRID's visuals are gritty and realistic, and the cameras seems to be hand-held. Forza's cars look like they are made of shiny plastic. GRID's cars look like real cars.Forza *is* a great game, of the type of game it tries to be: a classy racer. But GRID is all about *racing excitement*. In fact, I haven't played it for days, and I'm getting excited just thinking about playing it. No other game has captured for me so well the sense of urgency in racing a car.GRID, however, isn't your typical arcade racer. The driving model feels terribly realistic, even with all possible driving aids turned on. This is one game you must *learn* how to drive. Winning any race in GRID is an *achievement*. The very real possibility of serious car damage adds loads of excitement, while the "flashback" feature (the Omega-13 of racing games) gives you the ability to recover from serious errors (five or so errors per race). So you end up driving a bit more aggressively than you might otherwise. The result is a level of excitement in racing that I've never found elsewhere. The cars feel real, and the AI feels real, and the graphics look real. Where the game cheats reality is where reality is *boring*.There is no good reason this game is so cheap. It's a steal at under $20.

4Grid is an Exellent Game But Lacks Some Small Features
By W. Carlin
Let me start out by saying that grid is an unbelievable game. the cars all look great, the tracks look amazing, and the game really gives a feeling that you have a race team. Being able to manage your team and sign sponsors and drivers adds to the realistic qualities. The controls are spot on, however the physics seem a little too forgiving sometimes. The ai makes up for the physics. Your competition will always race like real drivers and will try and win the race. An example of this would be that you hear over your intercom that a driver spun out trying to pass another driver. The intercom is one of the few small flaws. The intercom is mostly helpful but is sometimes deceptive. I've had the intercom tell me that my tires are toast and then five seconds later say everything is fine. Sometime when the car gets really messed up it doesn't say anything! The damage is very realistic and will have varied effects on the cars. Sometimes they will swerve to one side or just stop running or not go as fast. Another small flaw is that there are not that many tracks in each region so you have similar races alot. Bu thats not a big deal. The only thing that I really did not like about grid was the lack of mechanical customization. You cannot mechanically customize your cars whatsoever! Even with that flaw, there is a good variety of cars and they are all fun to drive. All three racing categories are enjoyable. I would say american muscle and japanese drift are easy and european touring is a lot harder. So if you are into racing games at all pick up grid, you won't regret it!

2Like watching paint dry...
By CentauriPrime
Just to give this review some perspective, I've been playing the various iterations of Civ for a very, very long time. I remember playing the original like it was yesterday. Beavis and Butthead on the TV, Nirvana on the radio, and me on my Packard Bell. I spent hours in my mom's basement, wasting away from rickets while the normal kids were soaking up the sunlight, going out on dates, playing sports, and leading generally normal, productive lives. Civ 1 really messed up my life...but in a completely awesome way.I mean, I couldn't get enough. Doubly so with Civ 2. The things you could do with that game. It had...personality. I remember little stuff, like the different architectural styles, that gave the game such an immersive quality. I remember how every time I played, the world had its own story, and how things would seem to take on a life of their own. The endless war with the Mongols, my alliance with the Germans, butting heads with Caesar. I learned more about history there than I ever did in school. It was fantastic. I didn't even play to win most of the time. I was a fifteen year-old kid in a sandbox.I got older, and Civ grew with me. I spend endless hours on 3 and 4, balancing game commitments and my real life. When Civ 5 was announced, I didn't hesitate. I bought it immediately. In short, it didn't take me long before I realized that this new Civ was nothing like the Civ of old. I've never played Revolutions, but I've heard there is a lot of overlap. I don't know. What I do know is that this game is boring. Really, really boring. Never have I clicked the "next turn" button like I have here. Maybe it's because it takes forever to build anything...so long, in fact, that it's easier just to hoard gold and buy things. Maybe it's because expansion and/or conquest isn't really encouraged. The seemingly massive happiness hit just makes it unreasonable. So I sit there, just watching the world slowly go by.And how slow it is...the loading screen between turns has become my nemesis. I've turned the "superb" graphics down to their lowest setting, just to speed things up, and to keep things from jumping from one side of the world to the other every time I scroll my mouse. Just to be clear, I have a computer that can run all the latest shooters, yet cannot run a turn-based strategy game aimed at a mass audience. The AI is dumb and unfinished. If my dog had fingers, he could win on prince at least. I don't consider myself the smartest strategist, but I have never lost a war in Civ 5. Ever. I started on warlord, then prince, then king. Onward and upward I went, until I quickly realized that the AI wasn't getting smarter. It was just cheating. This was acceptable 15 years ago, not now.Why is Gandhi determined to kill me? After 2000 years of good relations, he wants to kill me. Not a biggie, mind you, because all he does is park archers next to my swordsmen, where I can promptly slaughter them. After I defeat his army (without taking any cities), he offers me all of his resources, all of his gold, and all of his cities (except for his capital, of course). He just gives up. I take him up on his offer, because I am obviously smarter than him. But that means my happiness tanks, my production stops, and my steady income stream is now in the red. Whatever. I still have 3 swordsmen and 2 archers. I can conquer the world with that. Screw culture.Did I mention the music? Man, it's boring. No more period specific soundtrack, tribal or classical. Just the turn-based equivalent of elevator music. I'm sure the graphics are the bees-knees, but with me playing on the lowest graphics setting, I will never know. City-states, which were made out to be a big deal, are not. They ask for stuff, you give it to them (or not). They give you stuff (or not). That is the extent of the city-state strategy. Boring.Actually, the city-state thing reminds me of a problem I have that extends beyond the poor quality of this game. Professional reviews. Why did every professional game review outlet give Civ 5 high marks. 9/10. A+. Really? Every review I've seen has been the same. "It has hexes!" "It has city-states!" "One unit per tile!" "Ranged combat!" "Beautiful graphics!" I even saw reviews gushing over how cool the opening sequence was (you know, the one you can't skip). For one, I am tired of seeing the old man in the hut every time I load up. I find it oddly fishy that no "professional" reviewer has brought up the bugginess; the fact that you need an internet connection; the fact that you need Steam; the fact that the AI stinks; etc, etc, etc. Just hexes and city-states. Either they were told to write a good review by the "powers that be," or they spent a total of 3 hours playing before writing their reviews. Either way, I will never trust a professional review source ever again.I gave this game 2 stars, because I believe it still has the potential to be good. After a few expansions, some mods, a Rhys and Fall, a Fall From Heaven. Yeah, it could be good. I've played around 60 hours, and still see a spark of genius here. But it will take an awful lot of work. Right now, it's like watching paint dry.

3One step forward, two steps back
By Torger
As a longtime fan of the series, I unfortunately have to say that Civ5 has been vastly overrated by professional reviewers. That's probably because the game looks great and the real flaws don't start to show up until after a few hours of play. There are certain things I really like about this game. City states were a great addition and make the game a lot more interesting. Being able to purchase land is awesome and realistic. Easier rushbuying is a lot of fun and doesn't unbalance the game. The new combat system is pretty goofy (for example, archers are a ranged unit but riflemen are not). It's a bit more fun than the old "stacks of doom," but I see reviewers praising the new combat system as "more streamlined" when it is definitely not. Moving an old stack of doom required 2 clicks (click on SOD, click on destination). Now you need to do the same thing 5-10 times as much to move an army. The new Civic talent tree offers more customization of specific traits, which is fun to plan around. However you can't swap civics to match a change in strategy in-game (eg. teching up at the beginning of the game and then turning to a warlike theocracy once you realize you're likely to lose the space race). This is disappointing. Overall, when Civ5's civics are compared to Civ4 its a wash.In-between-turn load times suck. On a normal size map in the modern age, I was sitting and watching the hourglass for an average of 15 seconds in between each turn--even when I wasn't watching animations of enemy moves. I'd blame my computer but it runs pretty much every other game at high settings without a hint of a problem.Music is poor, particularly the asian themed music which sounds like a bad parody of its genre. It's hard to believe they wasted time animating leaders and making them talk in their own languages. It doesn't add anything to the game and some of their voices (Queen Elizabeth) actually detract from it by being annoying. The lack of science/gold/culture sliders takes away a lot of customization potential that was fun to tinker with in previous Civ games. This became painfully apparent when going for a cultural victory. A cultural victory doesn't require the last 25% of the tech tree, but you can't stop researching until you run out of money. And in the meantime, because you're still researching new tech, your puppet states are building more and more new buildings and costing you more money. And when you run out of money you can't do a LOT of things, like rush-build or more importantly buy luxury resources and establish good relations with city states that provide culture. Basically you lose the ability to do the things that make the game fun. This is especially frustrating when it have been so easily solved with the old-school sliders, which were never that difficult to manage in the first place.Civ5 reminds me of Civ3, in that it attempts to add a couple of new game concepts and surprisingly flops at aspects in which its predecessor excelled. Overall, it's an interesting but ultimately flawed game that doesn't hold a candle to its predecessor and will most likely be remembered as one of the weaker chapters of a great series.

i'm just stunned, really.i've played probably 30 hours of civ5 now, and i keep thinking, "maybe i'll like it more as i learn more about it." or sometimes i think, "i'm just not used to it, once i get in the groove it'll be great."but you know what? i don't like it, and it's not getting any better.listen to all the reviews here (aside from the complaining about Steam) - the hexes ARE cool, and ranged units are a good introduction. the graphics are pretty, mostly, minus the mini-map which is cartoonish sadly. but all of this is totally obviated by the complete console-ization of this game.it's clearly made to look, feel and act like a console game - it's like Sid stared at console games, read some article about how console gaming is getting bigger and bigger and decided he'd try to capture that market as well. and in trying to make this pc/console hybrid, he's managed to produce a civ2/call to power 2 - a version of a great franchise that people would just assume didn't ever happen.there are good ideas here, i don't mean to say it's all bad. but it's just so obvious to me that they'd have had a complete winner if they just cleaned up civ4 a bit, added the hexes and new battle stuff and introduced the new ideas in a less destructive manner and stayed true to the platform that makes this game what it is. and i can't figure out why this didn't occur to them as well through the very long dev process. surely *somebody* raised a hand and said "this is kinda not what this game has ever been. should we think about this?"one of the other reviewers made this point, and they are right: why is it that each and every gaming site gave this such immensely high ratings, when nearly everyone else who's playing it seems to think quite the opposite? was each reviewer SO taken with hexes that they just couldn't keep focused? did they just not play that long?in the end, i guess i'm just disappointed this game isn't what it should have been. it's not the revolution the series needed and i have great hopes that the next step in Civ is already underway and that i can find enough in civ5 to wait the 5+ years until the next try. or that i can't make my peace with playing civ4 instead and skipping this altogether. i can't play minecraft instead forever :)try it at your friend's house first, or just skip it. you'll save the [...] bucks extra they're charging now, and the [...] bucks they want for new civs, another silly change to an unbroken model.

1Choppy - 1 fps with meduim graphics setting
By J. Roth
I have at least double the specs suggested and the game only runs decent on the second to lowest setting, which is lame. With medium graphic settings it runs at 1 fps (unplayable). It runs the same in high settings as it does in medium. I've seen video of this game running smoothly but I would suggest you have 3-4 times the specs listed if you want to play this. Its buggy too, if you run into something, you could flip your cat on its back and end up getting stuck there, sometimes floating in mid air, and your cat auto throttling up while floating, mine got to 2000kph and was still climbing. The game saved me in that postition so I had to start a new one. It got to the point where I could not continue a game. It would load to a black screen. Also, there is a % meter that adds up as you groom a slope, once you hit 100% you move on to the next level. Well on multiple occasions the meter never showed up while I was grooming. Needless to say the game is pretty much unplayable at this point. I've only had it a few days too. All I really wanted is a good snowplow sim and this was the closest thing i could find, and because its so buggy I never even got to try the plow attachment. The description says its a 2GB download, but the entire download is 233MB. I don't know if this file is corrupt or if this game is always like this. I wouldn't recommend taking a chance on this download though.Amazon is great though and has excellent customer service.
