5OEM kicks MS in the butt (where they keep their wallets!)
By R. Rim
Plain and simple: you are a FOOL if you purchase a Microsoft HDD just because you think there might be any compatibility issues! Sorry, I know no one likes to be called that and I also realize that most HDD's purchased will most likely be MS versions, but my rant is to provide emphasis on how great the OEM version is.No compatibility issues AT ALL -- the installation was so simple that, without any exaggeration, one might install it with their eyes closed! Turning on my 360, I was pleasantly surprised to see that my console displaying 'Microsoft' during start-up.Well all of this is just fine and dandy, but the REAL beauty of getting this HDD instead of the MS (besides sticking it to the man) is its 7200 RPM read-speed (versus Microsoft's 5400 RPM speed). Seriously, who on Earth would purchase a more expensive (MS) hard drive that performs slower than a less expensive and faster (OEM) version??!!Want proof of speed? Okay... if you have played 'COD Black Ops' then you know about that "spinning wheel" thingy that displays its loading process. Without any HDD at all (i.e. "Arcade" 360), the load-up took 10-11 spins of the wheel. With my friend's Microsoft HDD installed in my console (and the game installed onto the HDD), the load-up took about 8 spins of the wheel. Using the 7200 RPM OEM version, the load-up takes only 5-6 spins. I cannot tell you how often I am the first person loaded onto a multiplayer map... sometimes I have to wait around 10 seconds to count down before everyone is in and I can start running to the objective. NOTE: once loaded in, the faster RPM speed does not give you an advantage while playing -- keep in mind this speed reflects load (i.e. information reading) speed.Need more proof? Here ya go: I have played 'Fallout New Vegas' which was installed on both types of drives (MS vs. OEM). I mention this game because if you have played it then you understand just how aggravating the load times between locations are... painfully slow. Anyway, the time loading using the OEM 7200 RPM version was noticeably better (and way more bearable).Oh, BTW, I used to be in product design -- did you know that many "name brand" products are actually OEM items with logos printed on them? So basically, if you purchase a Microsoft version, you might be paying extra for their logo. The word "fool" cannot be defined any better.
