By D. A. Lewis
I am a seasoned RPG veteran. My favorite RPG is Gothic 2. In my mind nothing has come close to matching the all around brilliance of that game. However as time marches on the RPG genre is changing as far as the triple A titles. More and more the game play for RPGs involves how you handle the controller as opposed to what ever skill you have managed to build up in the game.Faery: Legends of Avalon is a throw back game. It has old school turn based combat. It has no voice over-overs, text only. The music, while good is a bit repetitive. And for the most part this game is on the rails (IE not open world and most things must be done in order). And the various game worlds are totally on the small end. Still, it's simple gameplay and charm won me over. Yes this is truly a game for novice gamers but sometimes we older more experienced folks like to have a good time at some simple gameplay fun. And for me that is what this game is . . . fun. While the game looks to be very short, the production is top notch. Graphics are spectacular in an animated faery tale kind of way. The user interface is simple and intuitive. Character creation and character level ups are top notch. And the story is . . . well consider the name of the game. . .The simplicity of this game actually turns this title into a casual game for experienced RPG vets. But hey, it's still fun to play. And I look forward to playing more stuff from this developer.

I purchased this game as something to play while watching Dr. Who with the grandchildren. I was looking for something a little more lighthearted than Dragon Age and Fable. Of course, coming in from those two games, this was really lightweight.Still, it was fun learning how to fly and achieving the quests. Some of the scenes are very dark making it problematic to locate items and flying search in a tree is a trifle off-putting.Still, overall, the game gave me everything I needed and I definitely think I would purchase the sequel and it will be a fun game to share with the grandchildren, especially those between 8 and 12.Pros: For such an inexpensive game, there was satisfactory character and weapon customization, side quests and flying, a potential promise for a sequel.Cons: a little too dark in at least one of the game areas, ends on a cliffhangerFaery: Legends of Avalon [Download]

I Downloaded the Xbox 360 version of the game so I cannot speak for it's PC counterpart completely. As far as the game is concerned I found I could lose hours in the character customization alone. You can edit a character's face and skin color right down to the shape of there eye brows and the way the characters mouth looks. You can also chose your gender so you can be either mail or female. Also, Your gender is your first choice in a unique engine for this game. You see the game is highly affected by the choices you make and your gender will determine your relationship with other character's. The choose your own adventure style is a nice aspect to this game that separates it from most games. Only a hand full of games out there allow you to make choices that affect your relationships and story later on down the road as opposed to following a set script.Once you move into the game you will find an interesting and unique world to explore. Flight makes exploring much more interesting then in most games as you will have to look in all directions to progress rather then just on the ground. Not to mention flying is just fun in this game.Fighting in this game is simple turned based RPG style. People new to turn based RPG game-play will really benefit as this game is simpler then most turned based RPG's. Making it easy to learn and pick up. Sadly this is also the games drawback as seasoned RPG gamers may find this game a little to un-challenging to beat. Also, Not to spoil the ending of the game but the one thing that upset me the most was that this does not feel like a full game. Given the ease of play and the to be contained ending you can't help but think you only got the first 4 levels of a much larger game. It does not stand up on its own enough to make you feel as though you got part one of a much larger adventure. Some might want to wait until the other parts of this game are out so they can play threw this as one complete adventure as opposed to paying like I did and having to wait for the developers to complete the game.In conclusion, I will say this game gets a 4 out of 5 as it has a great character customization system, and a unique flight elements making exploration different then most games, and a decent choose your won story type of game-play that does not exist in most games of this nature. However, I cannot give this game a 5 due to the lack of a true ending that leave the game feeling unfinished and the overly simplistic game play leaving not much for hard core players to enjoy for long.
